What's in the word interesting!? We kind of see it everywhere and anywhere. When in doubt, when at loss for proper words, while praising, while not really praising - interesting fits in for everything, I guess. Don't you feel that the word has gradually been digressing, covering for a whole lot of other words? Have a nice weekend!

Hi dear! Should I say your is a very 'interesting' observation. You see it is true that the use of this word has become too common. Many use it frequently so as to make their conversation interesting. This word has now got universal appeal as it arouses curiousivy and attention. For a person like me who has limited vocabulary, this word comes handy when I am at loss of words.....lol!

There are more apt words that can be used for doubtful scenarios, puzzling, bewildering, confusing... Interesting is something which i would prefer to use when the subject which keeps me engrossed or wants me to learn or know more about while comprehending the subject. Then I've also seen people using the word "Interesting" to avoid being rude or being direct and saying that this does not make sense. There's a whole lot of words out there more apt and suitable and there's the jargon too which people use. You are right Mimpi, certain words like Interesting get used too generally .

I agree. Since I am very bad with words especially when I am talking, I use this word. It has been a troubleshooter. But then, it is really offputting to substitute and synonymise it with apt words. I struggle with my vocabulary, obviously.

Struggle, bad with selection of vocabulary !!! Who Mimpi..... I've read your range of expressions and the selection of words have been most appropraite and deep reaching when required. In such an instance, if you are using this word often, it's only because of the word itself, which acts like a trouble shooter as you have said, and also because of your sweet and nice nature. There are other instances of other words which we use when particularly describing people, especially in the negative aspect.

Very interesting.Gosh I scrolled down the responses and found another chap made the same remark. No problem .Consider me the first one to say that. And anything that caters to our thirst of knowledge or our needs is definitely defined as interesting. The situations are plenty.

Like many terms in the English language, the meaning of or intent behind a word can be affected heavily by the manner in which it's said! "Interesting" has so many possible connotations when you think about it; and all of them come down to inflection! Personally I'm just happy that there are such things as sarcasm and cynicism. I get much considerably more mileage than average out of standard English words because of it!

Back with a bang! Never thought sarcasm or cynicism could affect anyone that much that he gets to explore and love a language more. But quite understandably, it's James I am talking about here.

You made me notice about it. Two people have already used that word within a span of 5 minutes after I read this discussion of yours. When I really think about it as well, the word has either replaced every other descriptive word, or it just made an identity in its own. If asked to further explain that term, I actually had to think hard just to think of other possible synonyms without looking it up. In trying to elaborate that term, Im gonna have to say, noteworthy, something that catches the attention, something that makes one think, something that incites the likes of people. Im not sure how accurate those are, but those are the explanations that I could come up with. It just might be one of those words that are evolving on its own, its meaning, and its use.

I just hope so. That's most desired but I fear about inadequate evolution that might harm the vocabulary. 'Interesting' is everyone's favorite for it is easy to fit in with much hassle and error and censures as well. . It is much safer that way.

Yeah, most people can just easily relate to that word that further explanations isnt really necessary. Better to be on the safe side.

It is...Well...Interesting...How often the word is used! It is used to cover a range of adjectives, as you say, and more people seem to be using it. I have used the word sometimes when I could not come up with another. The word interesting is supposed to mean causing curiosity or holding the attention according to the dictionary but it is sometimes used to describe something that we may not particularly like or dislike or maybe it is just a polite word to use instead of a negative one.

Exactly so! Interesting sometimes means, not sure, may be not so good and something negative. it has certainly evolved over the years.

Definitely mimpi.THis is one of thsoe words which have been used in a non traditional context for quite some time now.Earlier, in our days ,it was used in the traditional sense of the word. Some twenty years back my sisinlaw[she was in the States at that point of time] used this word for appreciating a saree --"hey this looks intersting "said she and I heard the word being used in that context for the first time.Recently , I heard my son using it for a herbal cool drink[some concoction which I had made ].

hi mimpi interesting that you should ask about interesting. my son used to say when he was little that adults always say interesting when they really mean do not bother me. so maybe' we have sort of overused the word. I know Ihave at times and wondered if another word would have better conveyed what I meant. May be fascinating, beautiful, wonderful, an interesting group of words, do not you think? What do you find so interesting about how we misuse this word? What is interesting about this discussion is how many ways we keep using interesting.

No, I do not think so. Some of the posts are still interesting and possitive. Sadness as we have , we can share it. Happiness, we still have, we can still share it ,too. I think you must have shared. here we still can make a lot of friends . When we met something ,we can post here ,where we can discuss about it. Have a nice day.

Interesting is a word which used to apply to something which really held the attention or something one found fascinating. Today, more often than not, interesting is used as an excuse for not wanting to offend, much in the same way that something is said to be "nice". Now, did you really wish us a pleasant weekend, or a "nice" one?

Hi there mimpi. Yes this comes as an interesting question : Well as the first responder stated, it really depends on the tone of the voice: it can mean a lot of things like something of interest, or like the mocking of a situation, or when someone doesn't want to admit his feelings toward a person... "what an interesting person" right ? Well there are probably other ways to use it but that's about it from me for now :P Take care !
