I'm going to be singing in the Messiah on December the 7th and I have a solo that night. I know there have been a lot of sicknesses going around here lately and I want to know how to take care of myself so I will still be able to sing. I know you can still get sick no matter how well you try to take care of yourself. I have a lot of allergies and it seems like whenever something is going around I always catch it. My nose just runs all the time here lately and sometimes I feel like my chest has a lot of phlegm. I drink a lot of water everyday and I feel like this will keep my throat hydrated. Do youall have any other suggestions?

mY GRANDMOTHER WAS A CHRISTAIN TO , kATHY BUT SHE THOUGHT HOT TODDIES WERE GOOD for a cold, flu whatever. I don't think being a christain keeps u from drinking something like that to help your problem.

After last night's rehearsal, I think everything is going to be okay. It's true, sicknesses and allergy problems can hit overnight. However, I'm going to consider all the suggestions everybody has given me here. I have tried mixing honey and lemon juice in my water and that seems to help. Of course, I exercise, take vitamin C, get plenty of rest, and drink at least 8 glasses of water everyday. I have been taking vitamin C 250 mgs. for quite sometime but I recently increased it to 500 mgs. That seems to help me a lot better. Kathy.

I used to always get sick when we had Easter Pageants.
I liked to use guifensin (Mucinex) and a decongestant. Fisherman's Friend, throat lozenges, which taste nasty
and our choir director liked a tea called Throat Coat, a brand called Traditional Mecicinals, in the health food sections of your store, or a health food store. I wish you all the best, Kathy.

Fisherman's Friend does not have fish in it, but black pepper, anise or licorice, and mint, if I remember correctly. It clears the sinuses and helps a lot.

Thank you for your response. I don't think I've ever heard of Fisherman's Friend but I can imagine the awful taste. I do like fish, though. I don't think I've ever seen Throat Coat where I shop for groceries but I might check my health food store in the mall. We went through all of the selections during the rehearsal last night and the director worked with me on my solo afterwards. I feel like the performance over all is going to go well. Kathy.

Just went to a lovely dinner, a week ago Saturday nite (Volounteer Firemen's appreciation dinner)...and I sat between the local Dr. and the local Policeman! Of course, the conversation got around to H1N1, and his suggestion for flus, colds...wild bacterias running around...was to gargle often (10 times a day) with a mild hypotonic solution (1 tsp.salt in 8 oz.)water...and to use a "netti" pot with same solution to flush sinuses, as these are the areas that these germs enter your system! Increase Vitamin C and D....decrease intake of "white sugar" in all it's disguises, as it compromises your immune system! Hope this helps a little, and you stay healthy for your concert, Kath. Cheers!

Thank you for your response. These all sound like very good suggestions. I'm not sure if I know what you mean by "netti" pot, though. Do you mean snuffling your sinuses with hot salty water? I have done this in the past and it seems to help. I have also snuffled lemon juice to open my sinuses. This works very well! I have recently increased my vitamin C intake from 250mgs. a day to 500mgs. a day. This works for me a lot better. As far as the vitamin D and decreasing the white sugar intake, I haven't done that. I may consider it, though. I take a fosamax tablet once a week, which is a calcium tablet. That's a form of vitamin D, isn't it? Kathy.

My sincerest apologies, Kath. I should pay attention more, "Fosamax" I see is from the same alendronate family, and I see that it is perscription, so I am sure your Dr. knows best. So I really do apologize for misreading! Cheers!

I read an article that says exercise helps fight off illness. I would increase your vitamin C intake. Eat green leafy veggies too. Just keep doing what you are doing. And keep your fingers crossed.

Drink plenty of fluids and I would stay away from Dairy products. I drink honey and lemon when I have throat or chest problems. I just heard a commercial for Airborne that it will keep your bodies inmume system good. I would also suggest eating alot of fruits and veggies. Plus try having garlic at least once a day and a multivitamin. Plus I would take extra vitamin C everyday. All this should get you to December 7 and beyond without getting sick. Good luck and good health to you.

Thank you for your response. I drink at least 8 glasses of water everyday. I have to because my throat stays so dry due to allergies and a syndrome I have called "sjogren's". It's not a very well known syndrome but it's where your glands stay dried out. My eyes are very dry on account of this. I don't eat enough dairy products, anyway. I recently started eating yogurt, though, because I recently had a UTI and that seems to have helped it. I eat fruits and veggies all the time. I have been taking vitamin C 250 mgs. for quite some time. I recently increased to 500 mgs. and that seems to help me a lot better. I have been putting lemon juice and honey in my water a lot here lately and that seems to help quite well. Kathy.

I agree with everything the others have said (Vitamin C, Vitamin D, drink lots of water, exercise, etc) but I'd like to add that you should make it a point to eat lots of brightly colored vegetables, as these contain antioxidents and other good things for overall health and make sure to get enough sleep. Relaxation will help your body fight off anything you may encounter.

Like others have expressed here getting plenty of rest is something that is a Plus. Also check out things like Echinachea which you can buy like at WalMart that is good for helping fight off a Cold besides taking Vitamin C. In reality there is really nothing we can completely do to keep from getting a cold or getting sick, but just trying to keep yourself healthy is a Good thing for sure.
Wishing you the Best with this Concert. Here it is the 3rd, so you must be getting excited and nervous. Hope this finds you feeling ok as well.

Hi tina! How are you doing these days? Thank you for your response. I bought some Airborne last night at Walgreens and I think it's going to help. It contains Echinachea. I've also been gargling twice a day with hot salty water and I've been drinking water mixed with lemon and honey. I'm also trying to stay out of the cold as much as possible and been getting plenty of rest and exercise. I exercise everyday, anyway. Yes, I'm very nervous but I'm trying not to worry about it too much. Kathy.

Get lots of rest and take your vitamins and minerals. In the winter I always take extra vitamin C and astragalus, and ZINC. Most of the zinc lozenges taste awful but the give good protection against runny noses and throat problems. And I would cut back on the sweets until after your performance too if it were me.
How delightful that you are performing!

Thank you for your response. I recently increased my vitamin C intake from 250mgs. a day to 500mgs. a day. I'm a little bit leery about taking zinc, though, because I knew a girl who had a bad allergic reaction from it one time. She had a lot of other serious health issues and she probably just couldn't take it, anyway. If it's the lozenges, that might be different and I might consider them. As far as cutting back on the sweets, lol
, that's going to be very hard for me to do! I only eat low calorie snacks, though. Kathy.

cyprus hi keep on drinking enough water, take multi vitamins
and above all wash your hands thoroughly each and every time
you use a restroom and often through out the day as there
are a lot of people coming down this season with the flu.
it is really vital to wash your hands and take time to do
it right with plenty of soap and warm water, not just a quick
scrub but take several minutes to soap up and rinse.thats the first thing any doctor will tell you about how to avoid
the flu.Use purell a disinfectant for the hands in between
tims too. also avoid letting anyone cough or sneeze in your
face. germs are spread in coughing and in sneezing too.

I seem to catch anything that is going around and it might be because I have so many allergies, anyway. Have a Happy Thanksgiving. Kathy.
