If they are long-haired and need to have it done then I certainly would. We haven't had any long haired cats for years so we don't do it. We do give our cats stuff that is supposed to help them pass fur balls. I was glad to see that product come out. What does not kill us makes us stronger!

I always tried to brush both long hair and short hair cats. I thought maybe it would keep the shedding down. They all liked it. They thought I was playing with them and after awhile would go after the brush, then I knew it was time to stop. Luckily their fur never got matted and they kept themselves clean.

I used to when I had a cat. Once we had a long-haired cat that went into the garage and managed to tip over some kind of solvent and we had to cut all its fur off to keep it from getting sick. That was a sorry-looking cat afterward. One can never be too careful hiding dangerous substances from kitties. They are just like kids and can get into just about anything they shouldn't.

I brush my cats at least once a week. When they groom themselves they consume a bunch of hair which they either have to throw back up (hair balls) or it will get stuck in their intestines which will constipate them. So, the four of them get brushed regularly. I even have had cats that love to be vacuumed!!! One of them would block the vacuum and I wouldn't be able to do anything until I gave him his vacuuming!
He would check the vacuum out daily and if it was moved from it's place he would throw a fit and I would have to get it just to vacuum him.

He is the only one out of the four that loves the vacuum. I vacuumed a couple of days ago and Willy took off like a rocket. Unfortunately it was in my family room where there is tile floor (linoleum). He got off the couch fine, but he couldn't get traction and scrambled across the family room, lost his footing and slid on his hind end into the dog bed which helped him make the corner into the kitchen. I know I shouldn't have laughed at the poor boy, but it was sooo funny to see the guy "sliding into home plate".
I love your comment about un-stapling the cat from the ceiling. It really tickled my funny bone. I needed a good laugh, apparently the military reservation that is close to my home is playing war games, but it sounds like they are shooting in my back yard! It is the first time in 29 years that I have been concerned about living in the country.

I grew up with short haired cats & we brushed their hair once a week with a curry comb...the amount of hair that comes out of them, it's amazing they don't go bald lol but I guess that's because they are always getting their winter/summer coats

That is soooo true!! I grew up with a short haired cat but she was part persian so her coat was REALLY thick!! I reckon I could've easily made a new wig every 1-2 weeks with her excess fur!

I use a fine tooth comb on my short haired cat rather than a brush. He usually likes it, and it removes a lot of loose hair that would otherwise be flying around my house or making fur balls in his tummy. I comb him daily, sometimes two or more times. He won't let me get his stomach, though, and those white hairs are the ones that get all over my dark clothes.

[b]What?! You haven't yet learned to always dress in the colors of your cat's fur, so as to avoid this problem??
Teasing!
But the things we cat "owners () will do to accommodate our fur-babies, eh?

I also brush my cats' hair now and then. But they never sit quiet. They try to run away. My husband has to hold them and then I will brush the hair for them. I wonder why it is not enjoyable for them. I brush the hair softly and gently only.

[b]Try asking a vet. It might be due to having the wrong kind of brush or comb, or some other reason she or he could help you with.
All else being okay, then you may need to spring for a professional groomer now & then.
In the meantime, get your vet to recommend some hair-ball medicine. I can't recall the name, but there's a creamy brown substance (comes in a tube) that one may dab onto a cat's feet which helps eliminate fur-balls. They like the taste of it, so they groom & consume it, & it goes to work.

Maybe you should tell her not to brush hers for a while, & see how she likes when it gets matted! (I believe in teaching kids to be responsible through non-harmful...creative...discipline!

I guess it goes along with their grooming, after all I have seen some cats who rub their head a bit whilst grooming themselves.

[b]Every time I'm close to a cat my instinct is to brush it. I keep a comb or brush handy, in case I get the chance. Fur balls suck, truly, but I just like the sensation, & most of them seem to enjoy it, too!

Hi Jugsjugs,
Hi used to brush my cats hair evey now and then when it was there before. But It used to never sit in one place it used to run off. Then my brother use to catch hold of him and get me back. He used to never like brushing his hairs.

Have a great day

I used to be religious about brushing my long-haired cat Little Bit's fur, but I haven't in quite some time. Main reason being is I don't have the time to chase him as he tries to literly eat the brush. He finds brushing to be a game, and he bites at the brush and walks in circles around me.
Cats will be cats.

Yes, some of them do think it's a game, & it can be a fun one, if you go with it. I always try to play whatever game a kitty wants in such cases. After all, it's valuable time we've chosen to spend together!

I do, especially to annoy them. More particularly, it keeps their skin healthy as well. I have a long haired and two short haired, but the female does not sit in my lap and does not get brushed.

I have done that when I had this one long haired cat that I named Bandit. When he got to be up in age, his fur would get all knotted and form mats that I had to cut them out and try to smooth out the rest of his fur. He liked it at first but then when I found a snag, he'd protest for it was really painful for him and I'd try to soothe them so he'd understand that I didn't mean to hurt him and then cut it out. My mom has a Russian Blue cat and she has medium hair length, not long at all but she loves to be brushed so mom brushes her every now and then. It's good therapy for mom because she lost her coordination when she had a brain stem stroke last year in April.

Hey jugs! I do brush my cats hair from time to time, but
probably not as often as I should. My cats have short hair
so it doesn't get matted to often. They have to be in the mood
to let me brush them, at least one of them does! Star loves
anything I do to him, but Luna is a bit more finicky with
everything and is a whiny cat! He has to be in the mood to let
me groom him or he gets annoyed!

I have two cats and they, along with our dog get brushed every day. One of the cats has rather long fur and she absolutely needs brushing because her fur has been known to get very matted. The other cat is a short hair but he loves being brushed so he gets it for a treat and the same goes with the dog. I bathe all my animals including the cats once a month or so; the cats are used to it, they don’t like it but let me do it anyway!

oh I am alergic to it so I shaved my cat all the way so I would not have to brush him. It seems to like it, and I put wool coats on him every day lol
