Have you ever gotten a ring resized?

I've had my wedding ring for over 6 years now, and have not yet needed it resized.
However, I've recently lost a little over 30 pounds, and now the ring is getting pretty loose. It's not yet falling off my finger, but it does slip and slide around a lot, and twists itself around on my finger. I can fit it on my middle finger now too, although it's a bit snug on that finger. I'm thinking I might soon have to look into resizing it, because I do plan on losing a lot more weight.
Have you ever needed a ring resized? What was the reason for resizing it? Can you give me some information about it, like how much it cost, how long it took, and how to tell forsure when you need it resized?

Just resize it when it's not comfortable to wear anymore or you're afraid that it's going to fall off your finger and get lost. The place where my husband bought my wedding ring/engagement ring resized mine for free. So maybe the place where you bought yours will do the same for you. It didn't take long at all, I think it took about a week for mine. I needed to get mine bigger because my husband upgraded my initial engagement ring and he got me a really vintage looking weddingband/engagement ring combo with a thicker band (that I LOVE), and because the band the was thicker I needed 1/2 a size bigger. You couldn't even tell the difference, and it looks so beautiful and fits perfectly!

I had free resizing from the jeweler we bought it from, but that only lasted 2 years, and as I said, I've had it over 6 years now. I will probably wait a bit longer. It's not falling off yet. Maybe after Christmas I'll look into it.

Oh, that sucks. Yeah I don't know how long our free resizing thing lasts. Like I said I had to get it resized right after he got it just because he surprised me with it and he didn't realize that I'd need a slightly bigger size with a thicker band. I can't image it would be too terribly expensive though, but I don't know.

I don't remember the cost, I just know if it's loose enough to fall off or too tight to put on, that it needs resizing. When my wedding ring got remade (because a diamond kept falling out), instead of making it smaller, they put a couple of gold bumps inside the band. Might be a cheap alternative to resizing yours.

Yes I have. After the birth of my daughter I lost some weight. The ring would spin on my finger like a top. It took about 2 weeks. If I recall right, it was about $50.

Hey kats! And congrats on your weight loss! That's alot of weight
to lose! I think that you definitely should get the ring resized
before you lose it! A wedding ring is way to important to lose!
Every jewler charges a different amount, but to have a ring cut
down definitely is alot cheaper than having it made larger! They
just have to measure your finger, cut it down and re-soder it!
Since they don't have to add any gold to it the price shouldn't
be too much! I have had quite a few rings resized and made smaller
and I paid around $6!

You have lost 30lb? That is amazing. Many congratuations. Ths is fantstic news. You must be feeling so proud of yourself right now.
I think that with the ring you can get something put inside to make is smaller temporarily until you have reached your desired weight. Then you can make it permanent.

Hi katsmeow,
Wow, you lost 30 pounds! That's quite a feat. Congratulations!
On resizing a wedding ring, I've been planning to have mine re-sized, but for the the opposite reason - I need to have it enlarged as it doesn't fit into my ring finger anymore. I've gained so much weight since I've had it 13years ago so it really needs re-sizing. On the other hand, maybe I should consider another and better alternative - and that's losing weight. Thanks for giving me this great idea.

Hi katsmeow. Yes, I have gotten a ring resized before. Years ago, I found a ring that I thought I wanted on one of those infomercial channels (it was so pretty on TV LOL). The problem was that the smallest size that they came in was a 6 and I wore a 4. My husband, or rather boyfriend at the time, ended up buying it for me, even though we knew it would have to be resized.
When we got it I found out I didn't like it after all, but I didn't have the heart to return it so I ended up getting it resized as I planned on wearing it anyway. So we got it resized at a jewelers. If I remember right the sizing cost about the same amount as the ring (about $80, I believe). Yikes!
I don't remember how long it took. It was about 16 years ago, after all. LOL You might want to call around and ask. You never know, you might just get a good deal on it!
Happy mylotting!

True. Needless to say, that was the first and last time I ever bought jewelry off TV! LOL

That is why I'll never buy anything off TV. You just don't really know what you're going to get... or if it's going to look as good in real life as it does on camera.

Congrats on the weightloss!
I haven't had one resized yet. As mine do slide around a bit from time to time BUT unless it was like that constantly than no. Like most people too my fingers swell a lil in summer and loosen up in winter.
I would really wait to do it, just tie some yarn around it for the time being. As you'll probably need the ring resized again anyway.

i rarely find a ring to that fits me straight away, unless i want it on my pinky. they make them to small, don't know what kind of hands a woman is suposed to have but it ain't larger fingers. i've not fitted my engagement ring in yrs, so i don't get to ware my rings that often. how far you can get it re-sized can also depend on the setting of stones, and design. i've got one ring where you can't really re-size it cause it would look silly unless already in a larger size. but usually it doesn't cost much to get done. so much per size, well that's what i've been paying.

Mine only has 1 diamond on it, and the rest is a very simple, thin gold band. I don't think it will be difficult to resize.

You could always get those cheap plastic sizers you can get at wal*mart. We went to a local jewelry store to get mine and my husband's ring resized. We had to get both sized because they were hand me downs. In any case, I think it cost roughly about $75.00 for both of ours, it was going to be more but the initial estimate was because they thought it's take a lot longer.

I had to get my wedding set sized because it was a 7 and I wear a 7 1/2. I took it to an independent jeweler in my city and it was about $70 and they had it for about 2 days. I know chains take longer. And, it may not be as expensive since you're going smaller not larger.

I don't see it being extremely expensive.. it's a very thin gold band. I think it would be difficult to go bigger since it is so thin, but smaller should not be an issue.

When I were a young lad, I decided that I would be stupid enough to slip my nan's ring onto my finger (I was very young, don't forget) and re-size it myself...With my teeth.
Needless to say, I couldn't remove the damn thing so I hid it for two days (God knows how nobody noticed) until my finger started swelling up, turning blue and throbbing in agony. One trip to A&E later, and I was all better again (albeit shaken up by having some scary-looking ring-removing mechanism being waved near my finger). Luckily, my nan wasn't too bothered since the ring wasn't significant to anything like a marriage or such.

Yes several times. Sometimes people won't bother to ask me my ring size or have it checked when they buy jewerly. So I end up having it resized.
If it is lose and slips and slides a lot and comes off to easy without some kind of effort then its a good idea to look into rezing it otherwise you might lose it and not even realize it.

I'm not sure I'm ready to resize it since I do plan on losing more weight. I don't want to have to keep going back every few months to resize it, then do it all over again if I happen to put the weight back on (heaven forbid). As of right now I'm wearing it on my middle finger, because it does slip and slide too much. Maybe after the holidays if I have some extra cash I'll get it resized.

I have gotten two rings resized because my fingers are so skinny. Both times, the place has done a great job of resizing. Once, it cost me $10 and the other time it didn't cost anything because the ring was under warranty. It took them both under one week, so the turn around time is pretty fast. If the ring is able to fit on your middle finger, then you should probably get it resized. You want the ring to be snug, but not too tight. The best option is to go to a jeweler that you trust and have them resize your finger. They will be able to tell you how far down you should resize your ring!

I do plan on continuing to lose weight, so I'm not certain about getting it resized right now, especially if it's going to be pricey. I'll look into it after Christmas, but if it's too expensive I'd be better off waiting until I've lost all the weight I want to.

hubby and i have been married for 22 years and i have gotten it resized once but now my fingers are swollen due to arthritis but i need to get a cyst removed on the middle finger of my left hand first before i get my rings done to see if that takes any of the swelling down.
