Extras! Would you be one? How does a two second slot grab you?

Here's another one to get your thinking caps on!. If you watch things like Eastenders and Emmerdale Farm or watch any of the adverts you always notice people walking about in the background well I have just started wondering about what it would be like to do something like that. Would you fancy seeing yourself on television if only for a few brief moments? I was looking in a magazine and I noticed this advert for extras and I was asking myself whether I could do something like that! Well, what do you think? Would you do something like that? Are you involved in this right now? If so, what is it like? I'm really tempted but I suppose, as with anything, it's a hard industry to get into! I suppose in today's day and age we have to try and put our hands to almost anything. Andrew

You know what, my friend? I think you have something there. It's a great way to make a lot of money in a short amount of time. I don't know what they would pay in the UK, but, here I hear that the going rate is at least $500 for simply walking onscreen. I wouldn't scoff at that at all! Let me know about the next blockbuster you'll be in. Who knows? You may get discovered! Take care! Purrs, Catwoman=^..^= & Mija

At one time I had a friend here in San Diego who got a job with a film crew in some nondescript job. One day there was an electrical fire on the set and he took over and fixed the machine that was the cause of the fire. After that they made him head electrician. Of course, you know he was in the credits of the movie and his pay was very substantial after that. This is just an example. Of course, he wasn't an actor, but, you get the idea I'm trying to get across. So, you just never know where things lead in life. I wouldn't be surprised if the next movie I see will have Andrew Freye as.........'THE FAMOUS WALKON'! LOL! Hey, wouldn't that make a great title for a movie? Lady MacBeth: Wow, Sir Lancelot! Looketh! Thou art showing 'THE FAMOUS WALKON'! Oh, me thinketh Andrew Freye is sooooo dreamy looking! Sir Lancelot: Oh, yeseth, I'm sureth he iseth. I wouldst liketh to see a movie whereth he doeseth something elseth other than walketh oneth! Besides, I haven't soldeth a lot of lances this weeketh. My weekly stipend willeth be a biteth shorteth. Maybe nexteth weeketh, M'Lady. Tuneth ineth for the nexteth installmenteth ofeth: THE FAMOUS WALKON! Purrs, Catwoman=^..^= & Mija

Wow! That is quite a substantial amount of money!. That's quite surprising for a walk on slot. Still, I have an interest and I'm just trying to muster up the courage to actually do something about it now! I will certainly keep you informed as regards what I do! Whether I become a huge movie star, well I doubt that will ever happen but you never know!!Andrew

I always thought about being an extra but it is one of those niches that you have to be in the know with the right people. A friend of mine used to do extra work a years ago, he had a part in Braveheart and also in a soap here called Fair city. From what he told me he enjoyed the work and the pay is quite good for just a days shooting. We have a site over here were you can sign up for extra work but you have to pay for a membership to be on their books and you are not guaranteed of work. I have been tempted to sign up at some stage but have just been putting it off.

That's interesting! I guess it's a good thing to try and get into. I'm studying at college right now and there's also a chap that has been doing extra work for quite a few years. He gave me a list of different companies here in London so I'm inclined to look them up and see what they are about. I'm trying to muster up the courage to do something about it. I'm quiet natured as a person and I don't know whether this is going to pose a problem or not. I guess there's no harm in trying though, I won't know until I try! Good luck with you own efforts regarding this! Andrew

Thanks Andrew. He used the money he earned at the time to fund himself through college so it could be something that would be right up your street. It would take a bit of courage to get ones self on screen but most all of the roles my friend and many of his friends in the industry don't get speaking roles, so that would not be as intimidating to start out with. I would often see my mate in the background of Fair City drinking his glass of orange lol and as for Braveheart he had to point himself out to me.

There was something about this very subject on TV the other day. Apparently it's quite easy to get into. It can be unreliable though. You may not get work for weeks then get just one day or maybe a weeks work. Standing around for hours is normal and you might be in full costume in extreme weather conditions. The pay can be about $200 a day over here but you may not see yourself at all because you could end up being deleted by the film editor. :(

I reckon it would be a pretty exciting life experience. Worrying about cameras would not be a problem I reckon Andrew, you'd be in costume, maybe with other people and you'd have your bit to do...you probably would have too much going on to even notice the cameras...bite the bullet mate. Have a go, go for it. Live a little!

I'm sure that it's a nice experience to get into. I'm still deciding whether I want to try this or not. My friend is pretty happy though and he says that he has been receiving quite a bit of work recently. Anyway, it's just something else you can add to your portfolio I guess. When I think about it though I'm probably a little camera shy! I shall have to confront that fear if I'm to do something like this! Andrew

Did you know that is how some actors/actresses get "discovered"? I don't care much now to be an extra, but years ago I used to want to on TV. Who doesn't dream of being a famous actor/actress at one point or another in their life? LOL Well, that never happened, but my husband almost became an extra once. They had been shooting a made for TV movie at a place that we used to visit frequently. My husband went to get a closer look and watched from there, while I stayed back. We had our cat with us so I had to stay with him. When my husband came back to where I was at, he told me what had happened. He was asked if he'd be interested in being an extra! I thought it would be totally cool, but he wasn't really interested as it didn't pay much. I don't really remember, but I think they were filming around the same time that he had to work anyway. As he could make more with the job that he had back then he decided to not be an extra. Years later we joke around about it every now and then and say how he might have gotten famous from it. Oh well, looks like he wasn't meant to be an actor, after all! LOL Happy mylotting!

Yeah, I'd love the idea!! - not for the money or the 'fame' but just for the experience. I think most of us have to be 'actors' to some extent in our everyday lives and I quite enjoy that because no-one is totally sure who you really are (actually, most of the time, I'm not sure which Me is the real one!!)

I'm definitely familiar with that! I guess we all put on a face when we are outside in the big wide world! Being an extra may be something totally different and I may enjoy it although I know that the competition is extremely fierce! Well, I'm still deciding whether I will go through with it or not! I think it would be great and an unforgettable experience. If you do get the chance to be in one then, i wish you good luck. Not everybody gets the chance to be in a movie or television, even just as an extra, so try it. who knows you might be noticed and end up as a movie or tv star.

Hi sweetie, well I'm thinking seriously about this but it would definitely be way out of my comfort zone! It's just amazing what you can do these days! I have all the information I need I just need to make the effort and start making contact with these companies in order to find out more! Nice speaking to you again sweetie, take care. Andrew

I suppose people could do it as a kind of hobby that you get paid for but If you were serious about wanting to act then I feel that it could hurt your chances as it does not give you the chance to show off your acting ability and you would probably be looked over for a part if you were an extra as opposed to some actor who had been working on stage in the theatre.

Yes, I suppose it's something that can be done in order to earn some extra money! I'm not that serious as regards getting into acting although having said that you don't know what's around the corner! If you were to go on these sets and then start getting to know people then I guess you start getting into the not what you know but who you know concept! I suppose the competition would be fierce anyhow, most people want to be on tv don't they? Andrew

I guess you have to be in the right place at the right time to be an extra. I don't mean just accidentally being in the scene when the movie or TV crews start filming. I mean if you live in a place where they shoot a lot fo film, you can go on and apply. I think you are already steps ahead if you already have a list where to go. It could be difficult for you, but I'm sure that the only difficult part is the beginning. As soon as you get the hang of it, it'll be easy as pie. Even if you are the quiet type. Who knows? It may even open up doors for you for other opportunities! Good luck!

Well, a friend at college gave me some very useful information in relation to companies in London but I have yet to investigate and find out how they operate. I think it would be a great opportunity but I have yet to muster up the courage to do something positive about it. I'm open minded about the whole thing anyhow. Andrew
