It's so sad to hear news like this. probably the seat was so cramped and baby was under a nursing cover or her shawl... and she just fell asleep on the baby.
nursing mums do take note...
Sleeping mum smothers baby on jet
She fell asleep while nursing; doc on board failed to revive infant
LONDON: A nursing mother accidentally smothered her four-week old child aboard a United Airlines flight from Washington DC to Kuwait, a British tabloid has reported.
The Sun newspaper said that the mother, who it said was a 29-year-old Egyptian-born woman, fell asleep as she nursed on the jet and awoke after about an hour to find that she had accidentally suffocated the baby.
Crew on the jet were alerted by the mother's screams and the flight, which was over the Atlantic, was diverted to Heathrow Airport for an immediate landing, the paper reported on Tuesday.
Scotland Yard confirmed that a United Airlines plane had been diverted to Heathrow after reports that a four-week-old girl was in distress. The incident occurred last Wednesday.
The police said in a statement that the baby was taken to a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced dead. It added that an autopsy had been performed last Friday, but the results were still pending.
'The death is being treated as unexplained and the Child Abuse Investigation Team is investigating the circumstances,' the statement said.
Scotland Yard did not go into further detail, although Britain's Press Association news agency reported that such investigations were standard practice. No arrests have been made.
A police source told The Sun: 'This appears to be a tragic accident. The girl comes from a loving family. Her mum was going to Kuwait to show her to relatives.'
United Airlines spokesman Robin Urbanski said that a doctor aboard the flight tried unsuccessfully to revive the baby while the plane was still in the air.
The ground authorities later took over. Ms Urbanski said she had no information about what happened to the passenger after that, although the flight later proceeded to Kuwait.
The American Academy of Pediatrics has warned that sharing a bed or sleeping with an infant can be hazardous under certain conditions.
The British Association of nursing Mothers has said: 'Sitting up in bed while holding your baby is very dangerous, especially if you fall asleep.'

That is such tragic news and it must have upset the mother very much indeed. She was traveling with her baby girl and she fell asleep and by accident suffocated her. I remember when my own babies were very young and delicate. The airline must feel terrible about what happened on their plane. It was an awful thing to happen and it didn't seem to be anyone's fault. I know that a baby is safest on his or her back in a cot. My son was four months old the first time he flew.

Ouch! It is so sad.
Question is, if the baby is feeding, and the mum is in a sitting position, how does the mum falling asleep cause the baby to suffocate?
And assuming that the baby is being suffocated, doesn't the body react from the lack of air? And with those reactions, doesn't the mum feel it if she is holding the baby?
So sad... so so sad!

I am a man. I cannot imagine this kinda things happening.
Now that you describe the possible scenario, it is plausible.
Thanks for enlightening me! It is really an eye opener!
I must mention this to my wife when we have a baby of our own.
It is scary to know that such accidents can happen!
And so sad too!

Very sad indeed for the mother…she will have to live with this guilt and loss all her life and just because she fell asleep. Mothers of new-borns and infants are stressed all the time so I can understand her falling asleep like that…

indeed a tragic event ...
Air travel using an airplane with a baby in particular is safe. However, there are safety issues and medical issues to consider. A doctor may give a suggestion of air travel restrictions are not important to the baby during the first 2 weeks of the baby's life. At the time of newborn baby's body is in alignment with the environment outside the uterus and the baby's body is still susceptible to bacteria found in the recycling circulation of air in the plane.
If you choice use aircraft with a baby, better put your baby in the safety seat is mounted and provided with both the aircraft and facing backward and secured a seat next to you. Safety seats for children mainly certified for air travel. If you are not sure, check the labels existing certificate to make sure.

this is very tragic and depressing for the mother. I have a baby also and I would know how tiring it is for mother to take care of the baby and the whole family. maybe, the mother's tired that's why she fell asleep.that's why it is important for nursing mother or even nanny to be sensitive for the baby everytime, the baby is lying near their body. Just to avoid terrible accidents like this
