How Does Your Garden Grow

This coming year we are going to start our own garden because I love fresh fruits and vegetables but I don't like the cost of them at the store. Therefore, I've decided that we will grow some of our own. So, I was curious as to what other people grow in their own gardens. Are you happy with what you yield? Are there any fruits or vegetables that you have tried to grow but never got anything at all off of it? This past year we had two tomato plants and we never got a harvest off of them because the lovely neighborhood squirrels thought that our tomato plants were an all you can eat buffet. The squirrels are fat and happy but I was so disappointed that I never got to enjoy a tomato off the plants that I had babied so much.

i enjoy gardens... my plants grow inorganically... and its very productive. i am happy to see their large green leaves that tells me that they are healthy. the fruits are very sweet too. i grow mangoesteen, durian, start fruit, cashew and lanzoness in my garden and they bear fruit. do you what to know my secret? i used goat manure, mixed with a selected kind of grass that is eaten by goats and put some special kind of earthworms. earthworms help fertilize the soil. i use the soil as fertilizer to my fruits. i don't use insecticide either for the pest in my fruits, i use urine of the goats, mixed with hot pepper and other plant leaves. you can try it, its less expensive, less chemicals but will yield a very good result.

Sounds like you have a very effective method to make your garden grow. I hope that when we give it another go next year that it works out well for us as well.

Hi Dorann. When I owned a home in the country, I used to have a lot of beautiful flower beds and a nice vegetable garden. I did a lot of canning, freezing, and of course, we enjoyed the fresh veggies: sweet corn, lettuce, peas and beats, carrots, green beans, tomatoes, squash, cucumbers, and pumpkins. I miss it! Now that I have an apartment in town, I have to NOT plant things in the ground, but the neighbors upstairs, and across the hall, and myself plant things in pots and set them along the sides of the complex, put them in hanging pots, and set them on the patio. We share what we grow: herbs, cherry tomatoes, early girl tomatoes, and cucumbers. Next year, I'm going to add some green peppers and try potatoes. I've heard they can be grown in tubs and pails :)) And of course, I always have a lot of my beloved flowers. Karen

That's what we tried to do this year was a small patio garden, but obviously our neighborhood squirrels enjoy our patio more than we do. I believe that for next year we are going to rototil the side yard and do our garden there away from the trees and away from where the children play.

In our front yard we want to eventually tear out all of the grass and make it a large flower garden because of the fact that the front yard is so small. It really takes longer for us to pull the lawnmower around to the front of the house than it does to actually cut the grass out there.

I have planted all kinds of crops before. We have had corn, cucumbers, watermelon, cantalope, green beans, tomatoes, squash, kale, broccoli, cabbage, brussel sprouts, onions, lima beans, radish and probably a few others though out the years. What you can grow and when you can plant will be determined by what region you live in and what type of soil you have. I live in Virginia and can get both cool weather and warm weather crops in during a growing season. Places farther to the north may have a harder time getting both in as their growing season is shorter. I currently am working for a feed/seed company and if you will PM me with your address I can mail you a copy of our seed book. It is great as it describes all the different types of plants/seeds you can get, how long it takes them to grow, etc. Melon plants will take up a large amount of space and require much work for little yeild. Beans are good but I recommend the bush type so that you do not have to put poles and wiring up. Broccoli is hard becuase often it will go to seed before you get enough on a plant to harvest. Hope this information helps and please let me know if I can be of any further help to you.

Thank you so very much for sharing all of this wonderful information. We live in Kentucky so our weather is pretty much the same as what you have in Virginia and I imagine that many of the crops that you've listed would be good for our family as well. I know that we love the tomatoes and cucumbers and green beans and I think we are going to try peppers as well because my husband's parents (who live just a few miles north of us) have had great luck with those.
