Most of us want to look good, and some go to extreme lengths to go about it. There are even a few that can end up dead in their quests for beauty and youth. This quest is not new.

In the 16th century, a King of France had a mistress who was twenty years his senior; Diane de Poitiers. Her beauty was known to be exceptional, white of face and slim of limb.

Poitiers had to compete with beauties decades younger than she to maintain both her lover's interest in her and her social status. A woman back then couldn't obtain status on her own, men held the key. For whatever reason, she couldn't marry 'well' and obtain status that way. She had to take the 'courtesan' path.

Poitiers had a fatal beauty regimen that involved liquid, drinkable gold...that finally killed her.

We're all going to age, what's the purpose of looking like we are 30 years old in the face if we're using a walker and crapping on ourselves?

Looks like she'd have to do quite a bit to "maintain her lover's interest", eh? 
I think most standards of 'beauty' are absurdly unrealistic and idealised (airbrushed), and ultimately dangerous.
No accident that they are mostly applied to women - that's a function of the patriarchal society in which we live. Most blokes are ugly as sin, but there are fewer penalties for being repulsive as a guy.
I reckon: just be yourself. Any c*nt that can't appreciate the beauty in truth is just a c*nt and doesn't deserve the time of day.

Standards of beauty have changed over the centuries. Men of the... cortisean class in that century spent as much time in front of a mirror as did the women. The movie Dangerous Liaisons gave one a peek into the dark and often sordid world of the rich yet idle cortisean and the male & female 'beauties' of the past.
