Surveillance - How Far Should Authorities Go?

I am quite disturbed with the British making cellphone network providers store the details of every phone call for at least a year. It is also a fact that under the proposals, the details of every email sent and website visited will also be recorded to help the police and security services fight crime and terrorism. I can understand about this need to curb, control and counter terrorism. Surveillance is mandatory but I just do not agree with it being carried out across the board on all end users. This is just not right and ethical. I felt that security agencies should take a back seat and let cellphone network providers do such a task. I felt that it should only be carried out on a case by case basis so as to avoid any unnecessary inconveniences and most of all infringements of privacy. I think this time the authorities here is not thinking and unbecoming. What's your say? well to be honest I have no problems with a surveillance state so to speak, I would rather be safe and looked over than be un-safe and free to do as I please. I have nothing to hide at all, much the same as most law abiding people in the uk and world wide. Your e-mails are already tracked by your isp and what you d/load can also be monitored by piracy purposes. I do think it shouldn't be the police or special services that track and police communications but then again if its left to your mobile provider then your bills would go up as would cost them more to give you a mobile service. Plus pay and you go mobiles should also be registered to a person as most criminals will buy a pay as you go use it for criminal activity then throw it away no way of tracking who bought that phone. So in summary I have no problem in being monitored as I am living my life aslong as its done properly and my information is safe and secure thats my biggest concern as the goverment and hmrc keep leaving laptops lying about with details stored on them.

Yeah, that's bad. Here in the Philippines, it is illegal for government authorities to do that. It's against to our Anti-wiretapping Law. There are other ways to effectively curb terrorism other than wiretapping.

I can't speak much for british laws. I'm an Americain. However I do agree that keeping records for at least a year would be benifical not only to Athorities, but it could be useful for the person who owns the phone service. Keeping tabs on things aren't really bad things. Very little information is devolaged on those records. Number usually if its incoming or out going, and where it came from. To me that doesn't seem like a big deal.
