I have returned from my 7 day holiday at Penneshaw, Kangaroo Island. The title to my discussion is correct. When we turned up the street to go to my small holiday home, we were faced with at least ten cows roaming free. They had escaped from a neighbours paddock and were getting a bit panicky as they were lost. A few got into a neighbours yard, and she told them to f....off..They moowed half the night. Within 30 minutes of finding roaming cows, we found two turkeys nesting in my yard. A small female and a verey large male. They had 11 eggs. I was amazed. I had never seen turkeys in my yard and didnt even know they lived on the island. Apparently they are domesticated turkeys that escaped years ago. We had hoped the eggs would hatch while we were there, but this didnt happen. The male was very protective of the eggs. That night, the wallabies came right up to within 2 metres of the back door, and my daughter fed them carrots. There were 5 wallabies, but we have had up to 21 living in or near my yard. I have attached a photo of the father turkey sitting on the eleven eggs.

Welcome back! Happy New Year! I hope you had a nice vacation. There are a lot of domesticated turkeys around here also. To bad the eggs didn't hatch while you were there. It's odd that the males were protective of the eggs.

The female would always run away from me, but the male stayed out, wouldnt move from the eggs.

It's kind of strange that the mother would leave the eggs alone. I guess other species are better fathers than humans are.

Welcome back home my friend Jenny Bianca. I am really glad to hear that you had a really enjoyable time on Kangaroo Island. I loved it when I visited it and remember seeing the penguins at Penneshaw. It must have been wonderful for your daughter to feed the friendly wallabies. Eleven eggs for the turkeys: wow. I didn't know that turkeys live on the island either. It is excellent that you saw so much wildlife.

Hi Jenny, we get strange things wandering up our track too, but never a wallaby or even a turkey, the turkeys are more likely to be crossing the road down by one of the beaches. The cows here don't roam at all, in fact they don't even look like normal cows and there are very few of them, but they always have their legs tied together.
