Torchwood - how could that go wrong? Right? It will still has the creator, Russell T. Davies. Will probably at least have John Barrowman for a least one episode. How could it go wrong? Can you say FOX? Yes, that lovely network that ruined the last few seasons of X-Files because they wanted to get rid of it. That canceled Firefly, Dollhouse and Terminator because, it seems, its really got a thing against science fiction. And lets consider what they did to the Doctor Who movie back in the 1990's - or not... So, here's the link... http://scifiwire.com/2010/01/fox-develops-us-torchwood.php lets hope these talks fall through... What do you think?

Well, I don't know what kind of connection you have, but the roomie finds the episodes online on torrents, tho I have no idea how they do the things they do... I do know, however, that you need to stay away from Pando - the powers that be are watching that one

X-Files went downhill when they moved production from Vancouver to California. (And I'm not saying that just because I worked on a lot of the episodes...)

That was certainly the start of its decline - I had trouble watching it because of the "ick" factors in about every other episode...

I didn't know it moved! ("Why doesn't somebody tell me these things?!") I know what Elic means about the "ick factor," though. I got so grossed out sometimes! Tell me, what was it like working on the productions? Did you get near any of the filming? Was it fun? Did you happen to be there the day "Scully" gagged everyone out on the set by eating a roach? (This was during the making of the sideshow freaks episode) Any interesting events to relate? Any other nosy questions I could ask? I loved that show. They were a great team to watch, & I like each equally, for different reasons. And whatever your part was in helping make it, thank you. Even my Bishop loved the show! I donno - Syfy doesn't seem to have any idea if they are coming or going - they didn't do badly with Battlestar - except they should've just given it a NEW name.

I gather someone got out their pencil again...I can't tell because the link didn't work. But if it's what it sounds like, you have to ask yourself why! It's a great series, & wildly popular--so---why?!? This is who I promised myself never to get that involved in another series after they tried so hard to kill off Dr. Who (but they're still trying to!). Yet then I turned right around & totally got into The Sentinel. That was your fault, durn it, but now can I get you to watch it with me? Noooo... Still, you also finally convinced me to start following Torchwood, & LOOK WHAT HAPPENS!!! I refuse to carry the torch for yet another great show. It's just maddening, that's what it is. Cack-handed PTBs!!! Grrr! Maggiepie "We will need to rewrite some history, of course." Mrs. Michelle Obama

When will you credit me with common sense? Of course! Didn't work. Anyway, your post told me all I want to know. Details would only depress me, & it's already depressing enough as it is. }o( Hm...does this mean the animated or comic book (whatever) version will fall through, too? Booooo!!! A pox on Fox! I tend to hate American versions of British shows. Most of them bomb and disappear quickly, like Life on Mars or worse yet Coupling. Coupling could never go over here on network, except possibly on FX, and maybe then only as a cartoon version. The best that can be said about Fox's Dr. Who is that it tried to keepthe series going during a dormant time in the UK and perhaps that lead to it's revival there. I've been hoping that Torchwood would continue although I wondered how they would fill out the cast after killing off most of the regulars. For a Fox version, I have a little trouble seeing John Barrowman as a regular because without the gayness that he displayed in the original. Then again you would need a character like Capt. Jack to hold things together. Another problem with an American version: in the UK programs generally run for a series of 6 to 12 episodes per year. In the US there are as many as 24 shows per year (unless on cable). Can Fox spend the money on special effects and fresh plots to keep the show running? All in all, I'd fee better if the US version was on SyFy instead of Fox, and it would be etter yet if the US version was a spin off of a new series of UK shows.

You sound like MY kindda people! I wouldn't say that Barrowman had a "gayness" since he said that Jack would sleep with anything and stated as much in the show. I do know they were trying to get Martha Jones and Micky Smith to take over the doctor and computer geek roles, but that fell through. Then they had Capt Jack take off into the outer space with his repaired transporter thingie. I also don't know what they would do without their uber-cool center under the streets of Cardiff... The biggest issue I can see with "Americanizing" Torchwood is that it was created by Queen Vic in the British Empire and by that time the only "colony" left over here was Canada. Granted, they do a lot of filming IN Canada, so I guess they could have a Torchwood in Canada someplace, kind of like the audio story of a Torchwood in India....

Before the Fox thing came up, I think I heard that they were going to do some some shows supposedly shot in the US (which of course could mean filmed in Canada.) I thought that Martha (in particular) and Micky could take over the roles you suggested, except I'm not sure at this point and perhaps you know, what reality is Micky in now? I thought Rhys could actually have taken Iando's place, at least as the gopher or "custodian", except that would leave Capt. Jack without a love interest. When I referred to Capt. Jack's "gayness", I was in part meaning that Barrowman is gay and on Torchwood Capt. Jack seemed to swing more toward men than women. Of course, on Dr. Who, he seemed to be after whoever was the Doctor's current companion. Barrowman tried out for the US show Will and Grace before moving back to England. When he was turned down for the role, he asked why and was told he wasn't gay enough.

Yes ElicBxn you got that right. us producers will do all kinds of terrible things to good sf from overseas. they have to amerianize it and it jsut doesn't work out too well.

I found this on line. I am not sure what they mean by focusing on more global story line. Do you think they will be traveling to different countries to deal with the aliens? http://www.seattlepi.com/tvguide/414411_tvgif19.html Fox is developing an American version of the British hit series Torchwood, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Original series creator Russell Davies is writing the script for the adaptation, which comes from BBC Worldwide Productions, the trade paper reported. Torchwood follows a covert agency that investigates alien incidents on Earth and steals alien technology for its own use. The series — a spin-off of BBC's Doctor Who — originally aired stateside on BBC America along with the Torchwood miniseries "Children of Earth," which broke ratings records for the network. Besides Davies, the U.S. version of the show has recruited the help of BBC veterans Julie Gardner and Jane Tranter, the trade paper said. The man behind Capt. Jack Harkness, John Barrowman, may even star in the U.S. pilot. Unlike the original series, however, the new Torchwood will focus on a more global story line.

well, you know how Torchwood was mostly centered in Cardiff? I would guess that filming in either Vancouver or LA would give them the ability to seem to travel around more of the world. But if you watched the X-Files about the Jersey Devil and had any thought those western forests could be mistaken for the New Jersey Pine Barren, you got another "think" coming.

An American Torchwood? And making the storylines more global in nature? That sounds like a completely mad idea to me, they might just as well make a completely original series and avoid paying the BBC copyrright. For me, one of the things that makes Torchwood so distinctive is the fact that it's set in a fairly limited geographical area (mostly Cardiff and the surrounding countryside) along with the fact that Torchwood Cardiff seem to be an extremely low budget outfit compared to the London branch seen earlier in Doctor Who. Turning them into a bunch of globetrotters would completely alter the nature of the series.

I so AGREE!!! While I'd love to see Barrowman over here in the States again, it really wouldn't be the same... Besides, while UNIT is world wide, there's no reason that something Queen Vic created would be Mind you, heard a story set in India, but it was a hold over from the time India was part of the Empire

Exactly. I've thought for a long time that a series focussing on the American branch of UNIT would have potential if it was done properly - and you'd have the potential of tying it in with Doctor Who continuity instead of having it in a completely different continuity.
