The Book of Eli

I just saw The Book of Eli staring Denzel Washington. I am a sucker for Mad Max type sci-fi's and since I have never seen one where the lead character was black I was very very excited. I thought that aside a few representation issues the film was well done. I haven't seen any reviews on this one yet, however I overheard a few patrons who complained about the religious content. Have you seen this movie? What did you think about it? What about the religious angle?

Hi Dedgurlsingstheblus I didn't see the movie either but my son did although I am a fan of Denzel Washington I especially liked him in Training Day he played a bad cop very well anyway my son said that The Book Of Eli was OK at best like someone else mentioned it was a couple of good action scenes but for the most part it was nothing to get excited about according to my son , he saw it last week

I actually never watched training day. I had plained to, but my favorite gatherings tend to feature movies in the living room that you can't hear because of the group talking and laughing in the dinning room. So that kind of kept me away from that one. Also Denzel's speech when he accepted the award for the part also kept me from looking at it alone. I think the biggest problem with Book of Eli is that it was marketed as an action movie as opposed to a Sci-fi spiritual, because that's basically what it was. I think the way people were turned off about the story being about a religion would have kept many from seeing it, so its a hard one there. Again, I liked it, but I didn't go into it expecting nonstop action, in fact I went in not knowing what to expect aside a futuristic setting, and Denzel.

I did not see it but my husband did. He did not think very much of the movie. He said aside from a couple of action scenes it was kind of slow and boring. I don't think people should complain about the religious angle as that is apparent for any one to realize before the saw the movie so if they did not want to watch a movie with religous content they should not have gone to see it. I will probably wait until it comes out on DVD to see it.

My ex-BF said the same thing about the first Matrix, and I do remember some other people I talked to calling Eli slow. I should say I hadn't actually seen any previews for the movie. I saw the poster and my brother talked about the film a lot, so that probably added to my enjoyment, not knowing what would happen next. I said that to say I think a lot of folks might not have liked the film because it was marketed as an action movie and we are used to these films being filled with constant fight scenes and explosions. Now that I really think about it some more plot could have enriched the experience, like scenes showing the collapse of society, as opposed to people just talking about it... still I kind of liked the slowness, it gave the sense of an empty planet. Thanks for commenting.
