Candles and Chemical Sensitivity

I've always enjoyed colored candles and the look of candle light, but as I get older I find I cannot tolerate scented candles or most incense. It's not that I don't like the scents, but if I buy or I am given a new pillar candle I usually end up giving it to a friend or tossing it out because the chemicals in the fragrance make my eyes burn and sometimes make it hard to breathe.
Have you had similar problems? If so, what kinds of scents do you find the most irritating?

Certain scents give me a headache. I can't wear perfume and I try to buy all unscented products. Some candle scents are okay. If it is supposed to smell like Apple Spice or Pumpkin Pie it doesn't bother me. But flowery scents seem to cause more problems.
