My Feist Eats Very Fast!

My little dog is a Feist. He can devour a lot of food in a very short amount of time. I used to think it was cute - now I have become worried that he's going to choke one day! I find myself watching him like a hawk when he eats! I gave him a really big T bone the other day and before I knew it, it was gone. He's like a little gremlin that can never seem to get enough. Anybody else got an addict for a dog?

Hi Rallon; What breed is your dog?
My little Yorkie X can sometimes eat so fast it is alarming. I cut up her food very small as I do cook for her twice a day.
In talking with the vet, just a few days ago, we spoke about eating to fast. The vet concluded that this could cause the dog to vomit.
What I do for my pup is that, in addition to cutting her food up very small, in order to aid in the first stage of digestion, I sometimes fraction up her meal, giving her just a small amount at a time. Giving her time enough to somewhat clear her pallet before giving her another fraction.
So instead of putting her plate down with all of her food for one sitting, I give her a small portion, holding back the rest.
If my dog is really hungry, she will devour her food within seconds.
I try to keep my dog on a regular feeding schedule. I feed her cooked food twice a day, morning and night. Throughout the day, she can have as much kibble as she wants since her food dish is always replenished.

My dog (Buster) is Rat Terrier, but he eats like a German Shepherd! Yorkies are cute little dogs. My brother has a Yorkie puppy that he got about six weeks ago. That dog is super-hyper! My dog loved playing with him when he came to see us. Buster really didn't know what to do with him though as the puppy just ran circles around mine. My dog is about six years old - how old is yours?

Well my pup is two. She will be three in may 2010.
I think as long as our dogs can use the energy of there food, then it is a good thing if they have a healthy appetite. I wouldn't feed them heeps all at once though. Split it up through out the day.
I am amazed at how much my pup can eat too! She can eat as much as my brothers Russel Jack Terrier and he is even on a diet!! I have consulted the vet on her appetite. I don't think he believed me. I told him that even after that she will look up at me with those puppy eyes as if to be asking for more. The vet advised me to ignore the puppy dog eyes at that point. She sees the vet regularly and her weight is being maintained well so I don't think she is getting too much.
As long as she exercises a lot, we do okay.
The Yorkie Pup sounds like a lot of fun for Buster. He must be a real gentleman around the pup. I would love to see them together, playing, having fun.
Do you have a photo of your dog? and the puppy :D
