Kniphofia uvaria, Red Hot Poker. I have been growing my first and am curious on how I would go about handling this plant for the new season. As it is now, the tall busy stems look somewhat wilted due to the snow and frost, i suspect. (see photo) There have not been any flowers yet. I got it very small and this will be it's second year. I am wondering if I can prune it right back? If so, how far? Can I clip the spent stems right back? Will new ones grow? I appreciate any advice on how to care for this plant. I understand that I may divide clumps. Should I wait for the plant to mature enough to have gone through one flowering period or would that matter? What is the best time of year to divide this plant? Lastly, what type of soil does this plant thrive in and what fertilizer if any has proved beneficial? Thank you for your response.

My Dad used to line the back of our house with the Red Hot Pokers. He says they take very little care. He planted them & then every spring he'd cut the dried up stem back to about 1 inch above the ground. His plants had more of a long bladed grass look to them with the flower coming up out of the center...more like the picture Fjaril posted. He found that the plant would drop its seeds without his help & they grew rapidly. When the grassy blades began to wilt, he'd just pull them away from the plant. His plants were planted in red clay type soil as that is ALL we have here. They were planted on a slight hill which may have facilitated water drainage. I remember he only put out a few plants the first year & they kinda just took over the area over the next few years. The pic you posted doesn't look anything like what I remember, but maybe yours is a different variation. They have beautiful blooms. I will be interested to see what yours looks like come springtime. Maybe you can post another pic once yours begins to bloom.

Hello Lady Marissa; Thank you for your response. I will be glad to post another picture, for sure. Once it gets going again. I hope that it flowers this year. It had really grew last year. Perhaps once it flowers, i will have volunteers as well :D I have seen the plant in flower. Perhaps this species is more common in my area than others since I have seen the plant in bloom in other peoples yards around here. Thank you very much for the information.

Hi and thank you for your comment. Actually, it flowered and is not a red hot poker. I'm not sure what it is! I have a picture of it on my camera and will be uploading shortly. Hopefully some one of my MyLot friends could help identify this mystery plant. I am a bit disappointed as I picked the plant up at a local garden show. I was slightly misled I feel but none the less I have an idea where the plant will now go. Stay tuned for the pic.

THANK YOU FOR THE BR!!!! Just because I've never seen your variety, it does NOT mean that it doesn't exist!!! I look forward to seeing a pic of the blooms on your plant!!! It is very likely that you have a different variety than what grows here.

EvrWonder I am going to suggest you invest in a copy of Western gardening book as it has all that information on a zillion different plants and its not just for people in the western states but all over the US . You will find all the information you desire in it and it will always be a go to book for the serious gardener. I think from my memory that you treat Red HOt Pokers a lot like the more delicate Lily types but the book I mentioned will give you all the right information.

Hi Hatley, I have two already. I couldn't be without. Trouble is I wasn't sure if I cut it right down or what. I have consulted the Western Gardener and have searched online. This is the first Red Hot Poker that I have had and want to see it flowering in all is glory this summer so I thought I would send out my concerns to MyLotters. So far the advice has been helpful. Thank you for your response. I am going to look at the Western gardener again. Thank you Hatley.

I know we have had those but I just don't remember how well they did, I would look them up on the internet, you can find almost anything you want info on, there.
