From the nature of dark matter and the origin of the universe to the quest for a theory of everything there is agan a big mystery reagarding water. The fact that ice cube is the first oddity and the ystery deepens if you take thermometer and measure the temperature of the water at various depths, at the top, near trhe ice cube, you will find to be around 0degree celsious but at the bottom it should be about 4 degree celsious.that's because water is denser at 4 degree celsious than it is at any other temperature- another stange trait that sets it a[rat from other liquids. water's odd peperties dont stop there, and some are vital to life.beacause ice is less dense than water and water is less dense at its freezing point than waht it is slightly warmer.it freezes from top to down rather than the bottom up.so even during the ice ages, life continued to thrive on lake floors and in the deep ocean.water also has an extraordinary capacity to mop up heat, and this helps smooth out climatic changes that could othewise devastate ecosysteems. there are again some strange properties of water...if you know write here

It is a very good thing that water expands as it freezes, so ice floats. Otherwise, all northern bodies of water would be permanently frozen below the surface. Icebergs would break off from land masses and slowly sink.We would not have the constant movement of water from one place to another. We might not even be here. If you want to learn something truly strange about water, check out "ice 9". Kurt Vonnegut wrote a very entertaining book about it. Cat's Cradle.

One of the things that I have always saw as being very interesting about water is the fact that it is one of the few substances that you are able to see in all three states naturally in nature. There is snow and rain in percipitation and there is steam that rises off the road after a storm during the summer. This may not have been exactly what you were looking for, but it was one of the things that I always thought was very interesting about it.
