How long can I hide?

They want to reimage my pc at work to a new operating system. I have been hiding and avoiding testing my applications with the new image for weeks now. Now, in addition to the new OS, they want to get me a new PC. I like my pc and it's still plenty fast enough for me. Like my Father-in-law used to say, "verdammte Technik" (d*amned technology). Why do they have to go "upgrade" things that are working perfectly fine? How long do you think I can hide?

This is interesting. Is it the OS you are worried about, the new machine or just the change from what you are used to? I think we can get too comfortable sometimes with a situation and change is good for us. I know it is all very well to say so when it isn't me it is happening to but look at it this way, they will do it anyway, if you haven't tested the applications and they just change them overnight ,you will have a big learning curve lumped upon you but if you have already started to adapt, it will be easier. I think that the techie people will just look at all the PC's that haven't been changed over and say 'we are doing these last ones and the operators must cope with it'. Its might be because the old machines are not insured anymore or the software will be better supported on a new OS.

Sorry Dawn but time is running out on you. Be thankful for the time you've managed to stave off the inevitable, but it WILL happen. "They" call it progress, even though you no doubt call it a nuisance and a whole lot of other things.

Alice, I'm not wanting to keep up with it "all" - I just wish I could keep up with the little bit I need just to be able to do what I want to do!

If it's like my work place they'll give you so long to work the new O/S then one weekend they'll start to re image the Network Work stations, kinda a ready or not. Be best if you work with the new ones, so when the new image is pushed onto yours you can use the new O/S.

They asked for my working hours, so I wonder if they're going to try and work it in while I'm here or if they're going to try and sneak it in while I'm gone. Hmmm...

Hard to say, I liked to be there and ask questions but they may want to avoid that.

Hi Dawn, as long as you can stand for what you believe in you can continue "hiding". LOL. at the same time as long as you can take the pressure to have a new OS. but of course it will make lots of benefits once yu have the upgrade...i assure you that.

I can probably hold them off for a few days pleading being busy, in meetings, etc.

if you really don't want to then just tell them NO. it will not help you but will just stress you out.

Hi! I think , you can only hide till then, when they will come and without no warning will take your old PC and give you another one, new and as they think better then the last one. But can you tell them, or maybe you have tried, that you are satisfied with this PC and don't want a new one? P.S. Bist du Deutsche oder nur dein Schwiegervater( hope you understand it?)

i hate that constant upgrading too. i would say until things won't function, like being unable to upgrade things like adobe flash.of course if they want to pay for a new PC..shoot,i'd let them.

Have they caught up with you yet? Or are you still standing on the toilet in the ladies room so they can't see your feet?

One thing about technology it is already outdated before it rolls out. And technology is being enhanced at a rapid rate. Don't feel bad, I was recently upgraded to a vista version at work. And had to learn how things worked with it. But I really didn't have a choice since my PC crashed. It did at least give me a little advance learning curve since others have since got the same thing, but only because they were upgrading, not because their PC crashed. I'm one of the one's people come to whenever they have PC issues, so I am least capable of helping them now, because had I not got the newer version, I would be just as lost as they are. We tend to not like change, we get comfortable with things the way they are. Just such as mylot did a lot of different changes. Some will like it and others won't.

Things at big companies especially are behind because they want their applications all to work with the new operating systems before they will implement them.

You may not be able to hide for long because they will find you eventually. I had to face the same thing in my old job. I was using a good PC and I used to run the switchboard through the computer and it all worked perfectly fine until they decided to do an upgrade and all hell broke lose! The switchboard was not working properly and phone calls were being cut off before I even received them, it was a nightmare from hell! It took us a week to be able to answer phone calls and for a business that is a long time! I believe in the old saying; “If it ain’t broke don’t fix it” Hope it doesn’t happen to you...Surely it’s got to go smoothly and who knows...You might love your new PC!

you will learn from scratch again using the computer and it will probably add a bit of knowledge and takes approximately one year even more to master it.Would you be known to have been hiding something and was forced to replace it.Please do not!

Well being up to date with technology is important, when new things come to the tech world there is always hesitation. Imagine the first time you were told to use the computer, maybe you thought, who needs a plastic box to do work with I can do the same work with my own hands and much better. And see where we are today using computers in our daily life. If I don't have my laptop even for a day, I feel helpless. So I will suggest don't hide but embrace it.

I am of the adage that if it isn't broken, don't try to fix it. As long as the system is working, I say leave it alone. They upgraded ours at work once and they haven't worked right since. Good luck...

If it 'aint broke, don't fix it! So sorry dawnald. No matter what you do, or however long you hide, you'd still have to face the music and accept change. I tried that myself here at work when the IT guys decided to upgrade everything. Luckily I am always out of the office so I had the perfect reason not to give them access to the computer. Finally, just before Christmas, when they knew nothing was going on too much in terms of work, one guy stood behind me and waited on me until I stood up for lunch. Which gave him the perfect opportunity to upgrade everything. I'd say a couple more days, max.

I'd say go for the new pc. Yours may be working fine now, but perhaps you can bargan and keep it as a back-up. I like to replace things before they break so I've got something to fall back on in the event the new product doesn't work the way it should. But, of course this is only my opinion.
