I think it has something to do with being taken away from their mothers before they're weened. No...but it may have something to do with being packaged in a tin can. I DO recall that there was some discrepancy a few years back about vegetables having contact with the metal materials that these cans were made out of. Perhaps that's what you're thinking about? However, I believe those concerns WERE addressed a long, long time ago, and now it's perfectly safe to eat any type of canned vegetables. cdrxo

...sorry I didn't get back to you yesterday... myLot was down on my PC. Anyway, I did find a web site where you can find out about the "myth" you're talking about. I say myth because, that's apparently what it boils down to. There was some talk about 2 types of harmful ways that baby carrots were washed in a chlorine bath before processing, and the other was when the carrots showed that whitish appearance after drying out, and then were washed before processing. i.e. 1: Chlorine Bath...and... 2: White Blush You can read all about it at: www.carrotmuseum.co.uk The BEST news is...neither are harmful for consumption. Good eatin'!!! Cheers; cdrxo

I did hear something like that a while ago. I don't remember exactly what it was though. I still buy the baby carrots though. I think even the bagged salad has something in it too.

Yes, I have heard as such. I get 'myMSN news' each day, and one of their links was about this. Gee, I wish this could have been posed a few days ago, then I would have the exact link for you. As it was, I sent my one daughter an email about it. While I don't have the whole article, this is the part I sent her: "?Are baby carrots preserved with bleach? A: Not exactly … and there's no reason to stop eating them, says Randy Worobo, Ph.D., an associate professor of food microbiology at Cornell University. Baby carrots are rinsed (not preserved) in a chlorine wash, recommended by the FDA, to kill bacteria like salmonella and E. coli, which cause foodborne illness. Most pre-cut produce, including frozen veggies and fruit salad, is washed with this or a similar sanitizer. My daughter and I decided to quit buying those baby carrots, and wash and slice our own full grown ones for my grandson. Over the years, there has been so many food additives, etc, that they have said were 'OK in small amounts', only to change their minds later about the risks. Since it's only the pre-cut stuff, and the baby carrots, etc, we decided it wasn't worth it to take the chance. To our way of thinking, while it might be safe to clean a cutting board with chlorine, when you're talking about food being rinsed in it...who's to say how much is absorbed by the food?!

I don't mind a bleach rinse I guess. There was some way they were treated before packaging that was supposedly not a good thing. Oh well.. maybe I'll find it again one day! thanx though!

I've no idea, but it matters not a tinker's dam; I dislike them. "Adult" carrots, or at least "teen" ones, have more character! Maggiepie "Our Constitution was made only for a moral & religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other." ~~President John Adams

As JoyfulOne pointed out, I have heard that baby carrots were washed in chlorine as well (from my parents education class). It's a real big turn off, but on the otherhand, I think baby carrots are ultra convenient for snacks! And so, I continue to buy them, though for the most part I am against chemicals in food - I am a hypocrite when it coems to baby carrots!
