If I'm Missing In Action Blame Verizon DSL

Oh the fun continues. I've had my Verizon DSL internet service for over three years now without a hitch. Then things went wrong around November. Now all along I've had automatic deductions via my bank account (through my debit card) and my payments went through. Then early December I got an email saying my November payment didn't go through as they claimed my bank returned payment and I was advised to get in touch with my bank. Okay, did that. According to my bank they had no record of any return/refusal of any Verizon DSL payments. I was also advised to call Verizon to verify my bank account/car info. Did that, done and was assured then that my payments would be deducted as usual. Then the next month's payment was due, same thing happened, and now it looked like I was two months behind in my payment. Again I emailed, and called Verizon and again reassured that since I was verifying my account my payments would go through....did it? NOPE.
Anyway for the past few months since November I would get the same crap, getting emails from Verizon that my payments haven't gone through, to call Verizon to verify my bank account number and contact my bank...I'VE BEEN DOING THIS..
Then only today, ONLY TODAY, I got a letter from Verizon, dated February 17th to pay the past due amount BY FEBRUARY 27th or my internet service will be suspended and perhaps discontinued.....WTF? I ONLY get the letter today and they expect a payment by check to get to them by the 27th?
So called the jerks today and once again got the run around. The person assured me that if I mail in a check to them they would allow for some time for the check to get to them...I owe them a total of $121.96--no problem I DO have it as I've kept the money aside. Thing is how can I be assured even if I mail out my check that it will still arrive in the allowable time? So if you don't see me around you'll know Verizon internet cut me off and due to NO FAULT of mine, or my bank, but Verizon.
Sooooo....anyone else have lovely stories to tell about their internet service? Did you ever have a similar problem? Did you ever have a problem like this and it wasn't your fault, bank's fault but the fault of your internet provider?

My friend Libby has wireless through them and has some connection issues sometimes. But the best story that shows how disorganized they are was when she applied for a job with them and they first called for the interview a day early and then on the day of the interview they called 20 minutes early. She called right back but they never returned her call.

I take it your friend never got the job. I've heard similar frustrating stories with Comcast and AT&T--guess they all suck, right?

I also hate the fact that all these companies have that automated thing, you know, press one for this, press two for that...I don't want a machine talking to me, I want a real person but don't ask how long it takes to get one!

hi pywacket no not a bank and internet problem must that when i started on time warner cable I had thought i madeit clear I wanted their cheapest p rice on internet service which was around twenty five dollars but since then its been 36 dollars instead, and raised it two dollars in jan so its 38 and I have not called them yet to find out why i was boosted up to 36 dollars,. it s a good internet service but I keep wondering why they boosted it to 36 then 38. I am a wuss as I have not
got on their case about it. the service is good and if I could afford to update my windows wou ld be faster. I am told I have the jack rabbit versin of cable which is the fastest but with my old windows 2000 it does not really speed all that much.

sk66 is right....it's all those darn fees and taxes that makes a bill go up. Like with my phone bill, they actually charge me $2.00 just to be listed in the phone book...

In your case, it might have something to do with taxes & fees. I would call them & find out for sure if I were you, though. Not to get off the subject but my cell phone should be $79.99/month. But when I get the bill, with taxes & fees, it goes up to $90.48.

I sure hope this gets straightened out too. I sent my check in via Express Mail (at a small fortune)--the PO worker said they should get it tomorrow before noon. If I hadn't sent it Express it could take a week and that would be too late

Maybe sebd it via Express same day delivery and certified.
Only thing I can think of to verify it gets there in time.
I have Qwest and the bill is for landline phone, internet
and satelitte TV and we send the payment out each month
and have not had any problems to date.
As always.....

Pye, Earthlink is the worst.
I transferred to stand alone dsl and ordered a line activated. There was already an unused phone line in the house that had a jack right beside where I wanted the new computer.
Earhlink had me down as having the service on 1/18 but when I went to hook uo the box - nothing. I called them and they insisted (from India of corse) that they checked and the line was active. I rechecked - nothing. I had a computer geek friend check - nothing. Called them agains, same story. Called back again, guy tells me that it may be still on the old line and all I have to do is have a swapper cable put in. I went ballistic and told them NO. They had to come back and do the work right. I was on hold off and on for the better part of an hour. Finally, a suervisor agreed to reschedule a Verizon visit. The guy from Verizon came two days later and admitted they made a mistake and the line was never hard wired at their end. It was straightened out and fixed the next day.
Verizon wasn't so bad. I could deal with them but how do you deal with guys in Bombay who refuse to believe that you don't have something?
Another problem. I've been having ftp space problems (Windows 7 problem). I called earthlink nto find out where the access went. Instead of just telling me its a compatibility problem with Windows7, some guy gives me a run around fix that didn't work and askes if he can send me the news earthlink CD that will help with any problem. I ask if it's free and he says absolutely totally free
& no shipping charge. When I called them today to make certain they d not charge me for the time I did not have dsl, the guy in billing tells me I will only have to pay for two very expensive cDs that will be shipped shortly. I hit the ceiling. My FREE earthlin software was some very expensive stuff including an ant virus program that is already on my computer. Fortunately, I just got the email confirming cancellation. (Quess some guy in India isn't going to get his commission on that one)
It seems we are now outsourcing jobs to people so they can cheat us.

I hate it that 99% of the time when one calls these companies you wind up talking to a call center place in India, like gee, can't people in our OWN country answer? I did read your discussion about your Windows 7 problem, but since I've never had Windows (having a Mac computer) couldn't reply

Sad thing is that the techs at Earthlink used to be good but now they are just a bunch of swarmy sales people tripping over themselves to con the dumb Americans. If they were in the USA every Better Business Board and Attorney General's Office in the country would be on their case.

Hi Pye! Boy, it sure sounds like you have all the luck. Sorry to hear that you are having such problems.
It sounds like either Verizon or your bank's payment processing center has changed their format causing the payments to be unrecognizable to the other for some reason. Up until the December payment, things were going correctly. Then something changed.
Having worked for a large bank, I would recommend that you call your bank and ask your call to be routed to the electronic payment processing department. Once you get there, as for a 3-way call to Verizon. Banks CAN do that at your request, as long as you are on the line to give approval for your bank and Verizon to discuss your accounts, plus you will hear the entire conversation. There is something going on with your information that is unrecognizable to the other, and the best way to solve it is with both on the line. This used to happen quite frequently with the bank I worked at, and it was always solvable. Good luck, let me know how you make out.

I remember the problem with the electric company. That was a mess, too. Have you tried deleting the auto-payment and then setting it up again? If Verizon's system still reflects your old account information, maybe that would correct it. Or, can you just start paying it manually, the same as you do your phone?
You know the old saying, "To err is human, but to really mess something up you need a computer." That sounds like it fits your case. Did you try the 3-way call idea?

We go through Sprint (well, now it's Embarq) for our DSL and thankfully we've never had a problem. Personally, I would have told them to take the sh*t out if it was going to be that big of a problem but then I have zero tolerance with idiots. I hope you get it all worked out. Good Luck!

One word of advice: ALWAYS ALWAYS get the name of the person you are speaking to and an employee number if they have one. Also since this is reacurring you might ask to speak to the supervisor, explain the problems and let them handle it. The problem might be that the workers aren't putting the information in right or something.

not my internet, but one time the cable company didn't get my payment - well, I PAID it, and it took a conference call (in 1982!!!) to get the cable company to realize that I had made the payment (the bank had an auto payment system even back then!!!) I had the cable company, the bank, the bank in BOSTON (who had the check) and me on the phone while we sorted it out.
I blame some person doing entry at the cable company probably putting their own info in instead of mine at that time.
AND
a few years later they discovered someone who WAS doing that and that person was fired AND charged with theft... Sure, it wasn't a felony amount from each one, but over all it amounted to nearly $2000 they had stolen... (remember, this was back in the day when a fairly complete cable only cost like $32...

LOL_-you had cable as early as I did..was it TimeWarner? I can't even remember what I used to pay when I first got cable...it added up quite a bit when I started adding all the premium movie channels---didn't even know banks had auto systems back then. You sometimes wonder if a lot of workers "help" themselves with any company

I have verizon dsl at home, too. I haven't really had any problems with them as far as their billing goes. I could be one of the few. I did however, have similar problem with my comcast cable bill. I called one day & paid the bill over the phone with my credit card. They even gave me a confirmation number & emailed it to me. 2 weeks later, I go on line & check my account & it said I haven't paid my bill yet. Called them back & the customer service person says, "Well, computer doesn't lie! It says you didn't pay for it so we need to set up a payment." So I forwarded the confirmation email as we were on the phone & said, "You're right. Computer doesn't lie! Here's the confirmation email you guys sent me saying I paid it. I expect you to fix it!" And hung up. Then called again 15 minutes later & asked for supervisor. Explained to him what happened & told him that I didn't like the attitude the customer serivce rep. gave me. Got 3 month free service out of it. I'm not saying try to rip them off but you might wanna try similar thing. See if you can get some sort of confirmation number or email, or both.

Well the guy I talked to said I HAVE to pay by check this time and not via on-line, so nope wouldn't be able to get a confirmation number. I'll mail the check tomorrow, cross my fingers, but plan to call them again tomorrow also.
Not related...but since you mentioned free service after being aggravated by your comcast bill. Two years ago, my electric bill skyrocketed to double, like huh? It wasn't only me but everyone else's electric bill zoomed up due to everyone's bill being estimates and the reason is they claimed "hazardous conditions" in the meter room (turned out to be asbestos in the area and strange they only declared it hazardous then when the building is some 60 or so years old)-----I complained, complained that no way should my bill be so high. After things were settled and I contacted a JUDGE for Public Service Commission the electric company realized their error and I too got three months free electric service due to the overcharges

Ah, Verizon, at it again! Boy, you have all the luck don't you? I have another friend who has Verizon and he started having trouble with his phone. They sent him a new one and it took alittle longer than they thought it would. He wasn't happen. This wasn't Verizon's fault but the mailing system. You otta get a print out of your transactions from the bank and send it to them! I hate it when you are made out to be the bad guy by some big company! I always want to fight and show them exactly what happened. Then do the na-na-nee-na-na thing. Ugh!

Print outs of my bank transactions? From when? Before all this happened?

I think Verizon is getting too big for their britches. Printouts of transactions around the time this was to have happened to show them nothing wet through from them. I would show them they are wrong not just tell them. I would be sure they know you are a person of honor and that they need to get a grip. And this check you are sending is supposed to get there in four days...??? If it is across town or not too far away.

Have I ever! My current Internet Provider is great and I’ve had minimal problems since I’ve been with them. I came to my current provider from another which almost drove me to a nervous breakdown! My emails did not work and it would either take half an hour for my email account to load or I was receiving emails two days or so late! It was outrageous and when I phoned I was constantly told that it wasn’t anything to do with them. I didn’t know what to do, my email was not working and no one would help me! I paid $300 to have the computer professionally cleaned out and reformatted all to no avail. I ended up writing a letter of complaint to the Ombudsman asking to get out of the contract which was eventually granted and the day I changed over; no problems, my emails came through at a faster rate instantly! To top it off the old provider had to refund me the three hundred bucks I spent on a technician. Victory for me! Hope it works out for you too Pye and that you won’t lose your connection. They are jerks aren’t they? All is well for three years and now they are stuffing up left right and centre! WTF???

As much as I'd like to give you hope pye I can tell you Verizon as absolutely worthless when it comes to getting things done right. Our elderly friend that we work for decided to get Verizon wireless internet.
They sent the equipment and it took forever to arrive the first time. When it did finally come they sent her get this,.. a refurbished wireless card with no cords, no instructions and even no batter cover. She couldn't even hook it up they sent absolutely nothing else?
So she calls them and goes round and round with them trying to explain that they screwed up then this guy tells her "Well we can send you another set of equipment but you will have to pay $69. She was absolutely livid. She hung up on them called back the next day and finally spoke with a very nice man that worked with her and sent the proper equipment. So she got it all hooked up and then her internet was incredibly slow. Slower than dial up even.
So she calls Verizon back and spends 3 hours on the phone with them, finally gets the darn thing working right and realizes they forgot to send her the battery cover to this wireless card as well, and the cable cord to plug it in to something I'm not sure what. So she calls them back and says "I would like to speak with Michael please" the lady insists she can help with whatever the problem is, Lou again says "I would like to speak with Michael please" again the lady refuses to connect her to Michael (the nice man from the previous call) so Lou finally had to raise her voice and say to the lady "Look either you let me speak with Michael or leave him a message to call me, or you put your supervisor on the phone take your pick."
So come to find out Michael was off for a few days so she was connected to this other guy who says "Ok we'll just send you a whole new kit, but we need you to send everything you have back to us first."
Then they sent her a bill for 2 months worth of service she didn't have because she was waiting to get proper equipment this whole time, and refused to credit her for the down time.
She is still waiting on the correct batch of equipment to get her service up and running again.
I know Comcast isn't perfect, but I'll keep my comcast before I'd ever go to Verizon LOL!

Hi Pye,
When my place was visited by a strong typhoon last September 2009, my internet connection was severely affected. I didn't have internet connection at home for 2 months, the provider was able to restore the lines by the end of December. Then, the part that's really annoying was, on January 2010(last month), I got my bill and guess what, they charged me the whole 3 months - September to December 2009, and they had the nerve to send me a disconnection letter. I called the company and told them that they've just restored the line and they should deduct the whole 2months from the bill. So the personnel apologized, and told me that the rebates will be reflected on the next bill. This month, I received the February billing and I have an unpaid balance of 4 months, so they have not deducted the rebates yet. That really got me angry. I called the provided to just disconnect it. So the customer service was again so nice and told me that she will try to fix the problem, and that I just need to wait for sometime and they're sure to come out with the correct billing. For all I care. I've already applied for a new internet connection with another provider. Their service suck anyway.

I have my internet along with my phone, and it is ATT. I have not ever had that problem. I find it totally weird that they are doing this. After three years. I have something similar going on with a nephew and his mail from me, and only from me, but that is the post office, so it has nothing to do with your Verizon DSL. I will keep all of this in mind though, and seriously consider whether I would ever want to do business with them. My worst experiences are with any customer service that gets switched to a call center overseas. I guess I had some trouble about a year ago like that and it took three different calls and three different customer service reps with three different approaches to get it fixed. Hey, is there any chance you can talk to a supervisor of the customer service representatives?

I don't have any story about Internet service, but a phone service company. One month after I disconnected my home number, I get an invoice to pay for $3000 for 30 minutes conversation with Europe.
The problem was that I didn't have long distance on my phone. And more, I supposedly called from disconnected phone with service I never order and never had. The story was dismissed, but 6 months later I got the bill from collection agency.
Ater faxing dismissal decision form the initial company, all was resolved....but only for the next 6 or 7 months...when another collection asked for money...
It seems to be never ending story. It is going on and off and on for the last 5 years.

...new collection can buy an old bill and sold it latter....I have been with at least 6 of them already...they stop calling when they have my original dismiss, but it makes my nerve...as usual I didn't hear anything for the last 7 months, but I never know if new agency is not going to buy the dismissed invoice....at least I know that I am safe as long as I keep the dismissal paper.

A lot of these collection agencies are scammers. There's a statue of limitations in how long a company can pursue an old bill whether legit or not...since they've been after you this long, they shouldn't be bothering you...what's the name of the collection agency? Most times one can type in the name of them in a search, and I'm just betting you'll come up that the collection agency is a scam business

Oooh! fun stuff. yup, i have things to say about our internet services here in manila, A LOT! Problem starts when they cannot provide the expected dsl speed they promised and every now and then, or most often, their signal goes down. They expect us to pay on time but they always go offline! I usally call them up whenever that happens so i can get a rebate for the time that they are not online. Now, that is where my billing problem starts, they say they will adjust it but when the billing comes in, the bill is in full! So, i have to call again for the clarification and this would pile up through the months, and now my billing statement is a mess. I don't understand why they cannot simply change the billing statement! at least, i don't pay through he bank. i pay in cash through payment centers.

i got some good news, my provider is increasing my speed by 256kbps. Here in manila, household use is in the average of 385kbps to 512kbps. i have the latter. It is considerably okay. Just because i signed up on their internet tv service, for free! and i will get to watch our world re-known boxer fight with clottey in the US. Somehow i understand the US economy, everything should go through your credit or debit card so that these companies can charge their customer double on surcharges. I was disgusted to find that out when i was working with a call center.

Sounds like you have fun with your service too..NOT. I sure wish they had pay centers here to pay in cash, but they don't

My goodness, pye...when they say bad things come in threes, they really mean it! Isn't this #3, for you...SSI, Medicaid..and NOW this? VERIZON, needs to be challenged if they are messing you up! I hope each time, you speak to some-one, you get a name! Are you in a system there, that you cannot go to another ISP?
Here, I am over a barrel...as living remotely, as I do...there is only one ISP that I can use...as the competition has not come to my area yet! So far, so good...but when I do have complaints, they are handled..somewhere in India, by someone I cannot understand! I pray that this get's resolved soon...as myLot and all your good friends want to hear from you often! Take care & Cheers!

From what I've heard some of the other internet providers suck too...LOL..AND cost a lot more. Yeah most times when to try and call customer service to any company it's usually handled by those call centers in India
As far as getting a name...they usually only answer/give their first name which doesn't help much

Oh how stupid. It cost them more to make this a court case than the amount you owed them..what did they hope to gain by that?

My ISP, Landline (telephone)..and Cell Phone, are all from one-provider..Telus! When I got my cell phone..it was a 3-yr. Contract. Finished last August..so I opted (now that I owned the cellphone) for pay as you go...$100.00+ taxes that was good for up to a year! I use it seldomly, only for emergencies, I don't think more than 5 people have the number. Anyway, couldn't change contract until I paid last bill of $37.00 which I put on M/C! All went fine, until I started receiving bills from them...which I ignored...final one, they were taking me to small claims court~~~for $37.00...I WENT BALLISTIC....insisted on speaking to a Supervisor, and also got their ID# and demanded that this be rectified immediately or I was going to the BBB. It seemed to have worked..so far..so good. Raise $hit, pye...I hate the Call Centres...but they seem to know you mean business when you ask for ID#! Cheers and Good Luck!

I had this problem with my insurances. Couldn't seem to pay them by bank account, check, etc. So Now I hand deliver the cash. Welcome to my world. They kept claiming I didn't pay them for my house insurance and my car insurance. No matter what I did. Drives you, doesn't it?
Haven't (knock on wood) had the problem with Earthlink.net or Time Warner Cable, but like you said, everything WAS fine with yours.

I have Verizon also and I haven't had any problems yet. I have only had internet service since August though. The only problem I have had is one time when I called customer service, the rep was rude. He acted like I was an idiot because I didn't know all the technical jargon he was spouting. I had to call a few other times and both times I got someone nice.
The best thing to do would be to call them and ask to talk to a supervisor. Sometimes that's the only way to get things settled in a timely manner.

Calling theses customer service centers is so frustrating, either it takes forever to get a real person to talk to and not an automated response, or when you do you're getting a call center in India

Yes it does seem like your on hold forever and then you get someone you can't understand!
