Video surveillance recommendations

Due to a PITA neighbor, I feel the need to purchase a video surveillance system for our home. I currently have a couple D-Link DCS-900 cameras which record through my computer, but that isn't cutting it. Video quality is fine, but it uses too much of the CPU time. Does anyone have experience and recommendations in this area? I've seen some basic 4 camera systems which look like they should be adequate for around $500. I'd rather not spend much more than that if possible. What do people think?
