Yeah, I came across one today. :) Of course, I'll put it in a different context. For example: Are you cheating? - Yes or no - No Are you not cheating? - Yes or no - No Now, I am not a native English speaker, so I dont know if this is right or wrong. I would be grateful if anybody taught me something. :) Thanks in advance. :)

I have a doubt vandana, I like vandana name, so I will call like that only. For the question, Are you cheating -- if you answer No Then for the question Are you not cheating-- how can you answer No?

Hi Buchi - you are welcome to call me anything but vandu. :) Well, this was in context of the husband cheating on wife. And it was a joke. So the wife asked him - are you cheating. He said no. Then she asked him are you not cheating - he again said no. Now he should have answered yes I am not cheating. But quite often people start with no. I am not. :) Try it in some other context, and you will notice it. :) Is this your house? - Yes, It is. Is this not your house? - options are a. Yes, it is - this is how I'd find people responding normally. b. No. It is - this is rare. But it means the same thing. See what I mean?

Hai abhaijith, when the answer for are you cheating is no then the answer for are you not cheating must be yes only.

There will be no double 'no'. My English knowledge is more more poor than you. You write good English.

Let me try to explain the same thing once more Are you going out - Yes. Are you not going out - no Ok? What does it mean - the first answer means that you are going out. Even the second answer means that you are going out. But the questions are entirely opposite!!!!!

hi Aunty, The thing you're thinking isn't right which means it is No so obviously it would be wrong----which means the answer would be Yes Hope you got my point

Hi Sunny - I agree it should be yes! Technically that is right as well, and that is what Bird has mentioned. But practically, if you tried that insertion of "not" in between, people are likely to start with No...:) Try it and you will find it. They feel that is the way to deny the accusation! :) Check it with some of the examples I have given amongst your friend circle, and you will know what I mean. :)

@Baluyadav, I cant dispute what you've said. Technically, that is right! But the person who listens to it will interpret it as Yes you cheated. Even though you are trying to express something else! :) Try it in practical life, and you'd know. I have given so many examples within this discussion. :)

Yes professor, that is the point. But the questions are opposite. So two opposite questions, giving same answer? Kind of funny, isn't it?

hi vandy oh good one . I am just now really awake after breakfast and two cups of coffee. Are you cheating? No but the next one is easy , two negatives like that ie. are you not cheating?no equals a positive , In other words are you not cheating and answered no that means you are cheating. good one so no I am not not cheating in other words yes I am cheating. Now my mind is going around in circles.

I felt it like that Hatley! Like a dog trying to catch its tail. I am so confused about it. :) But all advocates use such tricky stuff!

Are you cheating? answer no. Are you not cheating? the answer is still no because the guy knows that any yes around cheating will bring awful consequences. In this case the no is short for. No, I'm not cheating. This of course is the human answer. If you want the unfeeling technical answer, it should be yes. A double negative is a positive.

Exactly bird. :) This is what I was getting at! Technically, we should be answering "Yes". But we end up answering no. :) So shouldn't that lawyer's (liar's) "not" be banned from court proceedings? After all, many people could be answering wrong out of this confusion, and ending up making a mess of their cases. :)
