Bikes... Have You Seen These?

Some friends of mine are heavily involved in the freak/mutant bike culture. This involves the heavy modification of bicycles to change their appearance and functionality. Some of them have turned bikes into things such as bunk beds, grills, and rickshaws. Other more common modifications involve making tall bikes (The addition of one frame on top of another to make the bike itself not just the seat alone taller) and chopper style. Have you ever ridden one such bike or perhaps seen some of these clubs riding? I know that there are very active clubs in Minnesota, Oregon, Washington, Tennessee, New York, Texas, Illinois, and even as far away as Australia and Africa. What do you think about this counter culture? If you have ridden any of their creations or participated in some club events, what did you think? I know that even though I was never brought into the club that I was associating with, that I wouldn't trade those friendships and experiences for the world. How about you? :)

No, I never have seen any bikes like this and I haven't ridden any, either. I bet these are interesting, though. Kathy.

They are.. and fun =] Tallbikes are often used in a jousting type game. Smaller bikes are often used for whiplash games, etc. My bike takes 26" wheels and is a mountain bike frame. The handlebars and seat have been switched out so that they are more comfortable. The bike is white with fluorescent green and orange stars and stripes (Stars are kind of my trademark). I've ridden a chopper bike, ridden in one that had a side car made from a galvanized garbage can, and a triple high tall bike (three frames high). The chopper that I was on was almost 13 feet in length just from the handlebars to the fork. When another female friend and I were moving it (it had a flat) I had to put the fork up onto my shoulder and steer it or it took the two of us otherwise. http://www.rat-patrol.org http://www.klunkerleaguenow.com

Your bike sounds very pretty, zoey. I used to ride a bicycle a lot as a child. Now, I'm more of a horseback rider. I rode horseback a lot as a child, too, but only if somebody was watching me then. Kathy.
