Recent genetic studies have suggested that intermarrieges for many generations have led to a common genetic profile for most people.put more simply,it means castes are irrelevant now.indians had emerged from populations of shared ancestry who inter-married for many generations leading to a common genetic profile.
so caste and customs may be strong Barriers between groups.but the common ancestry and a host of tribes may be the people of the country.

I think that even without a genetic study, from a sociological and historical point of view, that the caste system is irrelevant. But the genetic study does give more tooth to the argument. Who exactly made the study and when was it made/published? Others might be interested to know.
I'm not really an Indian but I do have friends from India. I really find India's complex society intriguing and interesting.
