Shows like hoarders, do they tread on eggshells?

Being a borderline hoarder myself I sometimes find the best way to deal with the compulsion is get rid of a lot of stuff in one go. I also find that going away for a time helps me focus on what I don't need. Would it be better if shows like hoarders used a "cold turkey" treatment on some of the subjects? I don't mean clearing out the junk when they are not looking - that doesn't work. But perhaps sending them on a retreat to an uncluttered environment, such as a monastery, for a couple of months and helping them talk about the issues whilst they are there and then letting them go back and start de-junking. Sometimes it's a bit like watching someone intervene with an alcholic by asking them to have one less beer a week. What do you think? Would that be a stronger but more positive approach?

I think thats a great idea. Let them live in a beautiful environment for a while. I believe that would help in going home and wanting to continue to live in a great environment and then they will want to get rid of their junk. I just watched a show the other day where this good looking guy was a hoarder and his house was unbelieveable. From the look of him you would never know he was a hoarder. When he brought his girlfriend to his house she couldn't believe it and left him. He is in the process of cleaning up but its going to take about 6 months to a year.

I have been seeing quite abit on tv about hoarders lately. To be honest i don't know how in the world people live like that. I have alot of things [mostly glassware] in my house but it's all clean & orderly.
