What kinds of pearls do you think we will get with this? WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama is reassuring immigration reform advocates that he is committed to working with Congress on a comprehensive bill to fix a "broken immigration system." In a videotaped message presented on giant screens to thousands marching on the National Mall, Obama warned of the cost of inaction. He said problems with today's immigration system include families being torn apart, employers gaming the system and police officers struggling to keep communities safe. Obama said he would do everything in his power to forge a bipartisan consensus on immigration reform this year. Activists have been frustrated about the pace of that reform. Obama's taped comments were released just as he worked to get last-minute votes on a health care overhaul. http://www.foxnews.com/us/2010/03/21/obama-vows-commitment-immigration-reform/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+foxnews%2Fus+%28Text+-+US%29

We have approximately 11 million illegal immigrants living in the U.S. right now...many who have been here for a very long time and who have children who were born here. What do you suggest we do with that many people?

I agree it is a sticky situation. First of all, you will not be deporting 11 million people at one time. How about as they are caught. We have ICE offices for this. Get old school buses and strong sanctions for breaking the law. Regarding the kids, this is the hardest part for me because no matter what, I hate the idea of breaking up families. But I would say, send them with their families back to the home country then when they are adults, they can return here legally.

Ok, fair enough. First problem. How do you go about deporting 11 million people? Do you have any idea what that would take and how much that would cost the American taxpayers? How exactly do you transport that many people? Second problem. What do you do with the children who are American citizens? Do these children have the same constitutional rights as other Americans or are only some people entitled to the protections contained in it? This is a very sticky situation, laglen, and there are no easy solutions.

We are just starting to see the true cost of this vote. Not only do we have the special deals in the Bill as it passed but we have many side deals that may be difficult. How many of those who voted with the President will be getting high paying jobs in the government, Government Motors, Fanny or Freddie, or the Unions. Maybe he will appoint all kinds of Dirty Trick Czars or even Czars to encourage corruption.

If it is not one thing it is another. I am actually not concerned with illegal immigration, but I think this is toooooooooooooooooooooooooo much. I guess this answers my question I asked last year, what will be next.

But do you think it will be the next big thing or just a side venture?

Oh this will not be any side venture, this will turn into the biggest fight you have ever seen. With all the angry over health care and combine this with what happened last time immigration reform came on the time, I do not see how it could not turn into anything but a big thing.

All we need to do is actually enforce our existing laws. We would not in this situation if we had been enforcing them all along. This is going to another ugly one. I WILL NOT support a bill that has amnesty or a past to citizenship in it.

I just responded to another post about what's next and I think I guessed it right -- "undocumented worker" reform. I'm for offering each illegal alien a free one-way ticket for he/she and each member of his/her family back to his/her country. After that, they get caught, and back they go in handcuffs. As for the children born here, it's the family's choice, they can take their children with them or they can leave them here with family/friends who are legal citizens. Their decision... We're not forcing the children to go, we're simply telling the families to make a decision, but staying here illegally isn't one of them. As for the employers, who hire illegal aliens, I'd "nail them" with fines and jail time. No more of this slap on the wrist, turn your head, etc. stuff. And the older I get, the more hard-line I get, so they better get on with it, before I change my mind about the free trip home. In another year or so, I may insist on confiscating their earnings to pay for the arrest and transportation fees.

I like your immigration reform plan. I would vote for it but the bleeding hearts will make the US out to be the bad guy. People seem to forget that these people have already broken the law.
