Can Government fix Popcorn?

An Israeli lawmaker is hoping to butter up voters and pass a law that would limit outrageous popcorn prices at the movies. Carmel Shama, from the governing Likud party, plans to bring the "popcorn law" for a vote when parliament returns from its Passover break next week, the mass-selling Yediot Aharonot newspaper reported Wednesday. "We have to put an end to this. The public should not have to mortgage their houses for a soft drink and a snack," Shama told the paper. A large box of popcorn usually sells for about five dollars (four euros) at theatre concession stands, more than double what it costs at a supermarket and 10 times more than it would cost to make at home. Shama said he had support from both the government and opposition lawmakers for the move that would put limits on what theatres and other public entertainment venues, like sports stadiums, could charge to captive audiences. However, cinema owners slammed the move, saying it was a populist measure that ignored the free market. Yaacov Cohen, the owner of one of Israel's largest theatre complexes, said owners made virtually no profit from ticket sales and would be hard pressed to survive if food sales were limited. "It would destroy the entire industry," he told Yediot. http://www.breitbart.com/article.php?id=CNG.7b29aaf6c896a54d5d30e168e7de6207.111&show_article=1 Ok, so I know this is in Israel. But lets say for the purpose of this discussion that this happens here in America, hey don't laugh, we are closer than you may think. In my opinion, if the popcorn price is too high, dont buy it. I say let the market decide. If nobody is buying it, then they have to rethink things. Movie theaters literally only make money from the snack bar. Could this possibly close down theaters? would this now make candy bars $10? What is your opinion?

I think there are some rather more pressing issues to be tackled than the price of popcorn but, yes, its way too high here in the UK cinemas too. Most of them have signs up saying that you cannot take in your own food and drink and I have known people have their bags searched and food confiscated. I dont go very often but, last time I went, my (adult) son and I took in our lunch - 2 cheese rolls; 2 bagels; 2 chocolate sundaes and a bottle of water.... the total cost was less than the cinema were charging for a large Coke (of which, at least half would have been ice). I think the ticket prices are high enough for them to make a profit and, if I couldn't last a couple of hours without food, I wouldn't go - I'd wait and hire the DVD to watch at home

I admit that a government takes a law if the price of a product needed everyday by everybody (bread, milk, sugar,...) is outrageous, but I don't see any interest here : people don't go to theater to eat -- I hope so --, and if a theater needs the profits of a snack to live, it will rise the price of the other products or the tickets : popcorn will be cheaper and everything else will be higher, or popcorn will disappear -- sorry, we don't sell popcorn anymore ! --.

The Likud party is suppose to be the some what free market party of Israel, sort of like the GOP. The reason popcorn prices are so high at a movie theater is because ticket prices are low. The movie ticket price is the lose leader to get you into the theater. If the theater was forced to lower their prices on popcorn then the theater will just raise the price of something else. One other thing unless Israel is different no one is forcing you to go to the movie theater. Even if you go to watch a movie at the theater, that does not mean you have to pay their overly priced popcorn, soft drinks, and other concession stand products.

I agree, you can go to the movies and you do not have to purchase a thing at the snack bar

I can't believe that's actually an issue. I thought for sure this was an Onion article. No, it won't close down theaters. Popcorn seeds are cheap to buy and easy to pop, it just so happens that the theaters mark up their prices on it excessively because they can. If forced to bring down prices on popcorn, ticket prices, or prices for other foods would go up. That said, theater pop corn is over-rated in my opinion. It's oily and salty and makes me sick to my stomach. I'd much prefer a box of Sour-Patch Kids and a soda.

Pretty funny eh? I can make my own popcorn at home and it tastes much better. But it is nice we have the choice.

the food at the cinema is very overpriced. It's only a free market if you can choose to buy from someone else but they don't let you take food in. They know you can't sit through a 2-3 hour film without a drink (which is why it is always so warm in cinemas!). If they dropped the prices they would sell more of it and still make the same profit - possibly more because it wouldn't cost as much for a trip to the cinema as it does to go to a concert. There are very few independent cinemas left, they are all huge chains. If they are failing to make a profit it is their greed that has driven customers away.

The best way to make them lower their price, stop buying it. There are drinking fountains.

First, I don't consider people who go to the movies or a football game...captive audiences. People chose to buy a ticket and go. Now, they're at the movies or game, they can choose to buy or not to buy popcorn, candy, soda, etc. If you choose to buy, then pay the price. Keep big government out of it; it's not Government's function to monitor the price of popcorn!
