HI I've been hard of hearing since I worked in a factory building shocks for cars. I did wear ear plugs but the company wouldn't listen to me so I had to buy my hearing aids and they are old and bulky and ugly. I called a program in my insurance co. and wanted information as their card said I'd get a discount on new hearing aids. The lady that finally answered the phone was not nice. She YELLED at me on the phone and I had to hang up or tell her off good and proper! I did call a hearing aid place and had to leave a message. I then called that first lady back and told her she had better never yell at me or anyone who is hard of hearing again or I'd report her. Would you have done the same thing? And you hard of hearing too and have problems with people yelling at you ? Thanks, quita

I am sorry to hear that one. Its quite irritating if the there is someone will yell of us just because we have hard time hearing. But for us to hear them, sometimes they need to exert extra effort. I just hope she do it in quite and nice way. Not really to the point of shouting at you. I also have hard time hearing, even my boyfriend notice it. He once told me to go to ENT Clinic to check my hearing. I did not bother about it, because the reason why I could not hear him because there are lots of noise in our surrounding.

It's a fact that hearing people tend to get irritated with us that do not hears so well. You are right just some extra effort would help and be much nicer too, I am sorry you have blown off your boyfriends suggestion to go to an ENT clinic and get your hearing tested cuz of noise in your area. You might be surprised at how much you are missing by not hearing as well you should. Take the time. It's worth it.

I will take time and go to the ENT clinic and have it check. Just like what my beau told me. I'll find out what seems to be the problem.

LOL, it's a habit ! and, you know people who don't hear well will talk very loud too. You might need to get your hearing tested. I didn't think I was hard of hearing till I had my hearing tested. Usually the testing is free. I've had two checks now and they both were free. But, I did have to have the hearing aids and I knew I was going to too......didn't help none I apparently threw my old ones in the trash LOL I swear I didn't know I did ! But the new ones are great and you can barely tell I have them in unless you really look and the wind doesn't bother me and the sound is really good. But, I can't but laugh a little over you hollering LOL LInda knows :) hugggssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss

I agree.I probably should have asked for her superior or mangager but knew too that we were being recorded. I doubt seriously I'll be talking to her again or even to that dept. I was only asking for info on hearing aids and she works in that dept? But it's basically over and done with for me. I just hope she is watched closer and if her superiors listen to what I said and how she reacted then she will more than likely be removed. I do have an apt. next Tues with an audiologis tho. hugs, quita

sounds like you have a bit of industrial deffness it's called i think, from the machines. i've got a problem when the milking machines are on i don't hear much, even if they are not as loud as other daries. there are sometimes when out side of work i don't always hear cause, of other noises as well. don't blame you for complaining about it either, no one should say those things to you. you can still hear just not as good.

Well, idustrial deafness does fit however my daddy was hard of hearing and I've had to take this into account with my hearing problems. I believe you too need to see an audiologist and get help with hearing clearly and know what is being said. Makes life easier. The gal who yelled at me will more than likely lose her job cus the conversation was recorded. Personally I do not care! thanks for responding!

I'm not hard of hearing but yes, I would have done the same thing. It runs on my mother's side of the family to get hard of hearing the older you get and that's something I have to be concerned about. I'm glad you told this woman off the way you did. She needs to realize that she's working for the public and she has no right to talk to anybody this way, whether they are hard of hearing or not. She could get fired for this. I had a bookstore from 1984 to 1986 and I was taught never to be rude to a customer even if they are rude to you first. Kathy.

I hope I wasn't coming across that you ever yelled at customers. If I did, I didn't mean it that way. I just meant that that was what I was taught when I had my own business. Kathy.

Unfortunately hearng loss does have a lot to do with heridity. I did tell this gal off as she very impolite and nasty to boot. I would never yell at a customer............I was warned myself that the conversation would be recorded, so I'm only guessing she will get into trouble after this today! I have never been rude to another person who couldn't hear or to a person at all for that matter unless they were totally rude. Thanks for the post and take care, quita

I am not hard of hearing, but my mom is, so I have dealt with this issue all my life. For some reason, people hear "deaf" or "hard of hearing" and think that they need to yell to be heard. In fact, yelling normally makes it even harder for the person to hear and understand what is being said. Speaking a little louder might help, but what helps even more is for a person to slow down, speak clearly and be sure to enunciate.

I'm certainly glad you made this comment. It's been a bit confusing to read all these hard-of-hearing people complain about being yelled at - what did they expect? If you can't hear and someone wants to talk to you, they have to speak up, right? It's time for me to go check my hearing as well; my family always has to repeat things and I get annoyed that I can't hear anyone anymore. It's frustrating for all of us.

I'm pretty sure I would have done the exact same as you! Yes, it drives me nuts when somebody gets so upset and yells when I can't hear them (like I have a choice whether I can hear them or not lol) Back when I was in my early 40's I was driving a tractor with gang mowers for a few hours. Knowing I was going to have to drive for quite a few more hours, I went in at lunch and got my radio with head-phones. When I got off the tractor later that night I found I couldn't hear anybody talking. Then I couldn't hear anything for a few days later..absolutely nothing! It got better over time but my hearing is not as good as before that. I've had a steady high-pitched hum ever since then, and depend on my left ear to hear most stuff. I do wish I could afford hearing aids, but there's no way it's affordable. The family joke is frequently: 'can 'ya hear me now?' (like the cellphone commercial haha)

It might have been a little different if I hadn't been calling the place for info on hearing aids. GEEZZ There are so many who are hard of hearing from about the same thing as you have described and they too cannot afford hearing aids. I can't either but I was hoping to be able to put a bit back and maybe in a few months have enough with the discount the ins. co. provides. I just needed some facts and figures and all I got was YELLEd at. A lot of people are born with the tendancy to be hard of hearing but mine was brought on by working in an invironment of noise and I had to work. LOL, can you hear me now !? Yes, but could you speak up just a little bit louder LOL It's really not funny is it?

Hi quita! Yup, I'm legally deaf so I wear hearing aids too. Fun, eh? lol Depending on your income, you may be eligible for free hearing aid(s) Ask the Lion's Club and other different organizations around your area and see if you qualify. Those darn things are EXPENSIVE! So if you can get some or all of the help, it would be so much better on you to not have to pay for them or all of them. Now let me give you some advice, what ever you do, do NOT go to Miracle Ear!! They are the worst money making scammers I've ever seen! I got a set from them YEARS and YEARS ago and never ever again will I! They're nothing but sales people out to make that commission. They're not audiologists at all, just sales people. And yes, I have yelled back at people who act so ignorant like that "B" did to you. And yes, I've reported them because if they did it to me, who else are they doing it to?

NOOO, Cats being legally deaf or only partly deaf is NOT fun at all. I will check out the Lion's club here and I've also checked with DAV cuz hubby is a disabled veteran and I am hoping we can get some help from the DAV. I do ins. that helps me with 50% of the cost of hearing aids and I'm checking into all our policies including AARP who have a new program coming out now for just things like hearing phones and hearin aid batteries, etc but so far the program is only available in New Jersey and Florida which leaves me completely out. I have had miracle ear once and don't intend to do it again. The Beltone hearing is who I have the 50% discount with and I have an apt. next Tues. Yeah, that gal will more than likely lose her job. I was informed before the conversation that it was being recorded :) I hope so! Nobody needs to treat any body like that. Yes, if they get away with it once they will more than likely do it over and over again. Thanks and God bless, quita

No hearing problems, but I have a very short fuse when it comes to rude or incompetent employees. I'd have demanded to talk to her supervisor. If she'd hanged up on me, I'd have kept calling 'til I GOT to talk to said super. (I have Stubborn down reaaal gooood....heh...) Conversely, when I get good service, I also talk to the person's super, & tell that person how well the employee did. It's only fair. Maggiepie Can't find a spot for your discussion that really fits? For me not to have experience on that because I'm only 30years of age and not hard of hearing but I notice that it is hard to communicate about hard of hearing because you need to shout or loud the voice so that you understand of each other.

As far as I am concerned, I think I sometimes ahve a little problem in hearing my friends, yelling at me. When the time that they are yelling at me, maybe I just forcus myself in other things, so just can not hear they call me in such a loud voice, But with so many times calling at me, I begin to realize that it must be something wrong with me ,which makes me can not catch the words that by my friends, I think in the furure days, I need to try my best to keep attention on this and improve my hearing in some other ways.

You need to see an audiologist. Your symptoms are like mine. Believe me if you can afford hearing aids they make life so much more interesting. Your friends will love you for it too. they won't have to yell or holler at you. Yes,do what you can to improve your hearing. You will never be sorry.

My mother is hard of hearing but she got herself a new set of ears. We call then hearing aids, but she got them in January and she has fabulous hearing now. Infact she is even hearing the things she is not supposed to, so her husband tells me! LOL!
