actually many foreigners ask the same questions.india should do more to educate people overseas on what india is all about.because many people overseas think that india is all about caste, snakes, cows, jungles, tiger and elephantand yoga!
actually india is a whole lot more than that.it is a very complex country likes of which one cannot find anywhere else in the world.whats more, there is no other country in the whole wide world that has so many languages, local dialects, different cultures, different races all making up one single nation called india.
naturally there was the caste system.but it has been abolished.i am not sure if you have realised thaat today india is fast becoming one of the global giants.what is the caste system, pretty much that any member belonging to a particular caste was required to do only certain kind of job and ther rights were limited.this was the case prior to independence.but now,the caste system is totally abolished.i think that you mistook the statement "the caste system is abolished" to mean that there are no more castes in modern india.
but you are wrong, caste is not on skin color but rather based on religion.every citizen in india belongs to a certain communityt and according to which ever caste his parents belonged to he belongs to that caste today.
the caste system cannot be abolished in totality since it is based on religious beliefs.
whats more if you abolish the caste system you would be abolishing the religions as well.for example in hindu religion there are the brahmins of whom i am a part of.now this brahmins are subdivided into iyer and iyengar castes.the differences are subtle but they are there.so you may ask me then why is it being said that the csate system has been abolished.well,it should actually be said that "the misuse of the caste system has been abolished".
today we have a very avtive spreme court who does not hesitate to pull up the govenment and for that i am grateful.they also undertake the duty of safegaurding every citizen's rights.
today in modern india, the misuse of the caste systyem ahs been abolished and every citizen has equal rights and can take up what ever job he/she wants and can study up to wht ever level he/she wants and can purchase whatever he/she wants and can redress any of thier grievances in any court of law.
so today if an indian says that he belongs to certain caste all that means today is that he belongs to that community and thats that.
where as in the olden days he/she could hold supreme over others just by belonging to a certain caste, similarly if you belonged to the wrong caste in those times your rights would be curtailed.you would not have been able to buy property.you would have certain rights but not all the rights you would like.also the caste system began with the aryan invasion of india.
so as you can see today in modernn india
the misuse of the caste system has been abolished.no one is untouchable.whether you are a brahmin,or muslim or a dalit you all have the same rights undewr the indian constitution.as a matter of fact, secularity as a principle has been enshrined in the indian constitution.like any other nation our system is not perfect and the discrepancies do crop up now and then.but we all learn from all such things.anyway i hope i ahve setled your doubts.
so i hope that i have answered your question,
you can also check out the links below as well as the picture.bye!

Thank you very much for your detailed information. It showed me that I really knew nothing about India. It seems to be a very complex and varied land. You have been most informative.

you are most welcome linda.hope that you would visit india someday.many people believe that differences would destroy you but here in india it is these differences that seems to unite this country.like i said before there is no other place innthis world where people so disparate all come together to be one country.naturally there are some bad baggage which we are all trying to work through.
hopefullyy in the next few years or so,corruption would be rid off, reservation would be abolished and more transperency introduced.
recently the indian government passed a right to information act by which any citizen of india can access official documents[of course clasified ones do not fall in this ].
so from now on all indian governments have to be much more transparent.
hope that you consider my response the best!
adios!

The cast system in India does not exist very much, but it is being exploited by the politicians to get hand on the vote bank.Mainly Dalit,s or the schedule cast, who were assigned the lowest type of job's in society, are being used as a tool by the politicians. It is their marketing U.S.P. They have reservstions more than 40 percent in Gov't jobs. The politicians are also trying to pass a legislation to give them reservation's in private job,s.The Supreme court of India has also said no to private reservations, but they are trying to put in a bill,to stall supreme court order's.This is a funy democracy you see.We may be the biggest democratic nation in the world, but the poloticians have made a mocery of democracy. The General opinion is that the schedule caste fellow's should get incentives in form of monetary or social help from the country to compete with the rest, but that is not happening.Maybe America is much more democratic for its citizens and may not be for the rest of the world.India is democratic for the world, but not for it's citizen's.Only powerful people are enjoying everything.Hope that partly if not wholly answer's your question.
