Who is Right?

Yesterday at work I was walking down an aisle, and a lady who was walking backwards out of another aisle bumped into me HARD, and stepped on my foot which hurt a lot (I have a bad food due to a work related accident, and it doesn't take much to make it hurt all the way from my toes to my knee).
Even though SHE had bumped into me I said, "Excuse me ma'am, sorry about that."
She turns around and gives me a nasty look and says, "Why don't you watch where you're going?"
It made me sorry I had apologized at all. In fact I think SHE should have apologized to me, since SHE was the one walking backwards and not watching where she was going.
Who do you think was right, should she have apologized or should I keep my eye out for people walking backwards so I can dodge them better?

Hi, nonersays. From your discussion, I think that she should have been watching where she was going. A person should never walk backwards without even looking behind them. A person should never do this. They need to be paying attention, by keeping their eyes turned towards to where they are walking. She should have apologized, in fact, she is the first person that should say she was sorry for walking into you.
She was very rude for being nasty, when in ideal, it was her fault from the entire start.

I think she was talking to another woman at the other end of the aisle she was backing out of. I saw the two of them talking together later in the store again.

She should have apologized to you instead of you apologizing to her. The fact that you took responsibility by apologizing to her first let her off the hook to say anything remorseful to you. It is funny how people make themselves look better when another is first to say something or take responsibility for their non-attentive behavior. You did nothing wrong , there are some rude people in the world that eventually will see what it is like to be the one that i s hurt by another. Don't fret over it. Just take care of yourself and if it still hurts you should file a report in the store to see if they have any assistance.

Since I work retail where "the customer is always right" I'm used to automatically apologizing for Everything. Sadly my foot will never entirely quit hurting, not because of that lady stepping on it but because of a prior work related injury.

The person walking forward should see the person walking backwards. But really you should not walk backwards cause more times than not you don't know what is behind you.

I would have seen her if she was in front of me, but she was walking backwards out of another aisle to my right. I would not have been able to see her at all until the moment she bumped into me as I passed that aisle because there was a wall between her and me until I passed by.
I agree, people should not walk backwards, specially in busy public places like stores.
