How much do you know about tags?

For me the whole tag discussion and search engine keywords optimization and things like that is still a black hole in my knowledge. What about you? What are the words you should point out and is it a smart idea to point out two words? How would you tag this discussion? I'd go for tags"tag how to search engine keywords" but that's just my amatur guess. Does anyone want to help me a bit to understand how it works here and in website optimization? Thanks that would be much appreciated! Have a great day people

Yeah, I think the basic logic is to think about what's being discussed and then what, specifically, has been mentioned. I differentiate the two because you definitely want to create tags for what's being discussed; in this case, tagging. So, yeah, a lot of your tags here should be about, fittingly enough, tagging. However, you've also mentioned some things that aren't specifically about the actual discussion. For instance, in your original post, you used the phrase "black hole." Now, is it possible that "black hole" as a tag will get people to read this? Sure. Absolutely. But would it make sense as a tag for this? Is your post really about black holes or even enough about them that someone looking up black holes would be satisfied? Nope. However, there are some cases where a mention deserves a tag, in my opinion. You might, for instance, have a thread about Nicolas Cage. In it, you might say that he's better than Keanu Reeves. Even though Keanu isn't the focus of the discussion, I would still tag him because Keanu fans who are searching for Keanu Reeves might want to weigh in on who's better. So again, it's all about what will be useful for a searcher; not just about what will get people to read what you wrote, but who might be annoyed when it's not what they wanted.

Thanks for pointing out black holes when i tagged this discussion i didn't tag black holes just because of the things you mentioned. I might get a few more visitors but they wouldn't be interested. And i don't thing there's many searching for black holes on mylot. Can you tell me how you'd tag my discussion just so i see how different people tag it? And is it smart to write a lot of tags like 100 with the word tag and something else or is it best to use only a few...if you have any ideas about this one. Thanks a lot much appreciated

Here are the tags I used when I was prompted to add them for this discussion: how do you tag mylot tags tagging tags what is a tag why are tags important I used any words (or combination of words) I thought someone else might use to search for information on tagging or how to tag. Does that help?

Yes it does thank you so it's good to repeat the main word combined with words people might use. Just one more question...How does the order count? I bet it would be different if one wrote tag tag tag tag how do you mylot what is...do you use any commas to separate different words? Thanks for your help

I keep my tags to one word and I tag my on discussions with 10 one word tags. I keep them simple and use the same ones often, depending on which interest I am posting in. In this interest I use 'mylot' every time and then it depends on the tpic but I often use faqs, guidelines, discussions, responses, comments. advice, fun. By using the same tags often (asuming that they are pertinent to the topic) and then by keeping our own discussiona active (by adding comments to the responses) we will see our own discussions appear, not only in the search feature, but also in the column on the right 'similar topics' -- Those are discussions which have received recent activty regardless of howm long ago they were posted. When tagging discussions started by others I tag according to the topic and I also add some of those mentioned above (if it is in this interest obviously).

If I had started this discussion I would have tagged it with; mylot, tag, tagging, tagged, tagging tips, faqs, how to tag, tags, tag it, which tag. After submitting it the tags show up in alphabetical order and only 5 of them are visible. As more users add tags (it is not necessary to respond to be able to add tags) the 5 most used tags will appear, the most popular being first in the list (to the left),

Thanks for the very useful info mysdianait. So you think one word tagging is better? Would you be so kind and write how would you tag my discussion so i can compare it to other comments and get a taste of how you do it? Probably a good idea to write the mylot tag first since this discussion is in mylot section. Thanks again

You've already been given some good information so I will just add that if I submit a tag to someone else's discussion I sometimes use "questions" if the person is posing a philosophical question or asking for help since there is a myLot interest questions and answers.

I don't know much about tagging... I know that tags here helps people to find other discussions with the same topic or similar discussions.

That's about as much as i know about tags but some comments helped me to understand better. It's probably more important than we know especially if you have your own site.
