LA over plays their hand...needs to think before they act.

LA has decide to pass a boycot of Arizona over their illegal immigration bill...well that may not have been a smart move...and they really should have thought about it. YOu see LA gets its electricity from Arizona. So now they may be in the dark. Either they need to back off the boycott...or find a new place to get electricity.
Arizona Corporation Commissioner Gary Pierce said in a letter ""If an economic boycott is truly what you desire, I will be happy to encourage Arizona utilities to renegotiate your power agreements so Los Angeles no longer receives any power from Arizona-based generation. I am confident that Arizona’s utilities would be happy to take those electrons off your hands. If, however, you find that the City Council lacks the strength of its convictions to turn off the lights in Los Angeles and boycott Arizona power, please reconsider the wisdom of attempting to harm Arizona’s economy,".
Well I guess that puts the LA city coucil in its place...either put up or shut up. What do you think LA will do? It is not like they have a lot of choices as to where they can buy their electricity from.
Tell me what you think? Should LA have thought about the implications before they voted on the Boycott? Should they have boycotted? Should Arizona turn off the lights in LA?

Well, these aren't the good ol' Enron days on the west coast, so I am sure that Arizona doesn't have as much power as is assumed. If they don't send LA electricity, then they will lose that capacity, thus losing money. But, will LA take that chance? I'm not sure.

Well it's a difference between taking a financial hit, and having a city crippled by rolling blackouts. California's piss poor management of power is part of the reason the state has such a horrible budget deficit. This has been going on for a long time now.
Arizona's electric company likely wouldn't have trouble finding another customer, even another city in California. LA on the other hand, would be at the mercy of whatever power company is wiling to negotiate with them if Arizona pulls the plug.
At the very least, Arizona is calling the bluff of a very ignorant mayor and city council in LA.

Lil, what state is Arizona going to sell it's electricity to? There aren't any shortages of electricity any where so if they sell it to another state then that will create a surplus thus decreasing rates, thus making them less money.
I don't know that if LA knew that this wouldn't hurt them, or maybe they did. I wonder if Arizona knew what THEY were doing when they passed this completely political bill. Like I said before, for a state that cares so much about money, they sure are losing a ton of to make a political statement.

Arizona will just sell the power to another state....they won't loose money and they know. Which is why they are willing to call LA's bluff on the boycott.
LA should have really thought before they did it.
I don't think it will come to a "black out" in LA. But it just goes to show you that the city council was not thinking when they passed the boycott.

It won't go as far as AZ turning the lights off (although I wish they'd flicker them a couple of times to tell LA, "hello"). LA, SF, SD...should have thought before they boycotted. These boycotts/swords can cut both ways. I'd like to see LA (and the other cities, who should have been backing AZ) "eat" its boycott...or I really would flicker the lights... Go AZ!

I know it won't come to it....but I wish Az would cut off power to LA for a couple of days. Just to show them that they need to mind their own business.

I just love when do-gooders get their comeuppance! I think this is great. I do not think it will get to the point of LAs power going off. But the threat was well timed. LA needs to worry about LA and not what Arizona is doing for their residents, by the people, of the people and for the people. If anything, LA needs to look at Arizona as a model.

You would have thought SOMEONE at the city council meeting would have brought up the point that if htey boycott Arizona then where will they get their power? Idiots.
California does need to stay out of it. The people of Arizona get to decide their own laws...not other states dictating them to them.

Darn, you beat me to it. I'm just glad I saw your thread before I posted the same thing. I was going to call it "LA residents better learn to read by candlelight".
Ok, so this is just another example of the idiocy of California left wingers. You'd think the mayor and city council would realize that it is physically impossible for them to just up and cut off relations with a state that provides a quarter of their electricity. If they were smart, which clearly they're not, they would have first negotiated a deal with another supplier. Importing energy is not easy and it's part of what bankrupted that back-asswards state.
I personally would LOVE to see Arizona cut power for just one day to get those morons crawling back begging forgiveness. At this point, LA either needs to lose power, or retract their asinine policy of cutting ties with Arizona. Anything else would be them just proving to the world that they are completely full of $hit.

Sorry I beat you to it. I am sure you will get it next time.
I agree that California (or at least LA) is acting stupidly and childishly.
I would also LOVE to see AZ turn off the power to them. That would show them.

At the rate that cities are boycotting Arizona (Seattle makes the 11th), they're not exactly in a position to start picking and choosing who they sell to.

Arizona and the people of that state have the right to pass the laws they want. They only opinion that matter is what hte population of Az think of this bill...from what I have read they are hugely in favor of it. It is there state...they get to decide their own laws.
Just like we would not want a foreign country dictating to us what our laws should be...one state should not be telling another state what their laws should be. Don't like the laws in AZ...don't move there.
