Hello everyone here i am again asking about ants... there is one scenario in our home on which i see them patrolling and making their way on their home... they stick to the wall and formed a line,,, i noticed that each time i rub my fingers on their track they seem to be distracted, i mean i did not kill them but just erased their track and they got confused! why did they got distracted? and a few minutes later i was shocked that they were sticking together like they were having a rest and was like re-grouping... ants sometimes does have a funny lifestyle~

well, ants don't exactly 'see' as well as people do. they seem to use their antenna to 'feel' around, but they're actually picking up scents (like the snake and its tongue being able to smell the air..) for ants, there's a scent for everything, directions to the food, identification of other ants, directions back to their nest and so on. when ants travel in columns and trails, they actually follow each other's scent. the ants in front reinforce the scent for the ants at the back of the line and so on. in this way they won't ever get lost. when you look at most of the ant trails, you can notice the directions that the first ant took in establishing the trail. that's why ants seldom travel in a straight line when marching together
