Has anyone ever gotten a loan modification?

For various reasons, my husband and I ended up with a mortgage that didn't have the best terms in the world. But we were anxious to buy our new house so we took the mortgage anyway. Now, our interest rate is pretty high compared with what most people are getting. It's around 9 percent. I keep hearing about people who are getting rates in the 4 percent or 5 percent range now. I know that doesn't sound like much difference, but over the 30 years of our loan, that's going to be a lot of money. So we are considering getting a loan modification, similar to this: ( http://www.modificationsloan.com/ ). Has anyone done this before? Is there anything we should be cautious of? Anything to definitely avoid or include? I see a lot of stories on TV about people who got screwed over somehow on their mortgage or refinanced with a shady company or something and we definitely don't want to be in that situation, so any advice would be appreciated.
