This is a photo of 6 of the jars of Jam I made recently from my homegrown strawberries. Well, my wife made it actually. Anyhow, the recipe has to be "exact" as far as measurements or it won't set fully. Specifically the amount of sugar. Something wasn't right as the jam is not as thick as it should be. It is about 3/4ths thick as jam should be. But, it does taste great and will be used as an ice cream topping, or for pancakes, waffles etc. I will make the next batch and see if I have more luck than my wife does. Do you try and try again with recipes if it goes wrong right off the bat?

If it is something that I have never tried and it doesn't come out right the first time I would try a different recipe. There are recipes I have tweaked and have become my favorites, but they are for baked items. Jam and preserves are fussy and I haven't made them in years. However, I would like to do it again. My kids have some strawberry plants and I would love to make a batch of preserves.

Yeah some things canned can be tedious as heck to get the right finished product.

The really warm April did it.
My apple trees blossomed but then 2 days of frost killed the blooms.
No apples this year dang it.

Yum! My mom used to make freezer jam, I don't think it had to be so exact. I'm impressed that you managed to grow so many strawberries...I never get more than a few.

That's the recipe we used was freezer jam.
This is just the start of my strawberries actually.
I have maybe 100 plants in total.
many more will be ready this weekend or sooner.

No, this is why I use the premade stuff so I don't mess up..But that looks really good, like it would go perfect on my strawberry muffins..:)

I make strawberry jam, but I make it as a freezer jam because I am not confident in my ability re the art of canning. You can remedy the thinness by continuing to boil it down some, even if measurments haven't been perfect and also because of differing wateriness in the fruit. I do try and try again with recipes till I get them to do what I want. But, of course, as you say, even if not perfect for the purpose you intended, things can be used for other purposes and still be tasty and enjoyable.

mmmm.... That looks and sounds good! I'm sure it was perfect for pancakes and waffles! Did you next batch turn out ok?
I will try a recipe over if it doesn't work out. I have done that zillions of times with fudge. If you don't boil it exactly long enough then it's either syrupy or hard as a brick. It's expensive, but I've thrown away whole batches before because it didn't turn out right. But when it does turn out right - WOW!!!!
