Pearls

My mom just gave me a new set of pearls. She said it's a fresh water pearl. It's a pair of pearl stud earrings, a bracelet, and a mother pearl necklace. I know there are different kinds of pearls, but what are their differences? They all look the same to me. Lol. What are the differences between Fresh water pearls, south sea, and cultured pearls? Are there any other kinds of pearls other than the three? What is the most expensive kind of pearl?

Real pearls are either formed by natural or cultured means, in either fresh or saltwater. Freshwater pearls are grown inside oysters in rivers, lakes or ponds and are the less expensive than saltwater ones. Saltwater pearls are grown in seas and oceans, they are usually more expensive than freshwater pearls because they tend to form more perfectly round and have a better luster.South Sea pearls come from the largest pearl oyster and area a silvery grey colour - they are the best. Cultured pearls are helped along by the pearl farmer. The farmer feeds the oysters just what they need to make a better shaped pearl.

Oh okay. Cool. Complete information. Thanks! So how do they change the pearls' colors? like red, pink, blue, etc..

I think there is some difference in the color to a well trained eye. But most people can not tell right off. The only major difference is where they are produced. Cultured pearls are made in a closely controled environment and are easier to predict the availiabilty of than are fresh water or south sea.

I was told just within the last month that a fresh water pearl is slightly offshape from being perfectly round as salt water pearls and therefore are still good quality but not as expensive.
