Who knows the basics???? I am really trying to figure out what's going on in my Relational Database Management Systems class and since my Professor is of Indian descent, I have a hard time understanding what he says! Where are the professional database designers?

Hi,
In order to understand the Relational Database Management system you have to have a very good and in-depth understanding of a few basics things in mathematics. Sets, relations, functions are the foundation of Relational Database. Sometimes students don't get clear picture by using Oracle, in that case you may try to use Microsoft Access, until you get a firm grip on the subject. You will get a great visualization of the Relational Database System. I think you should buy a book, or, at least download some and start reading them right away. If it seems too difficult, then buy a book on discrete mathematics and read Set Theory again, this time with an implementation perspective. All the operations that are done on sets, can be done on databases too. Though the database looks more like a collection of tables. Each tuple is a set and Union, Intersection, Join etc can also be operated on these tables as well. If you are still having problems, you can ask me. I will publish stuffs in my blog for you. Thanks.
God bless you

Finally!! Someone that knows what they are talking about!! I hope you do not mind me adding you as a friend. My group project in this class is due this week and I've been nominated group facilitator and I am kind of weak in this subject. I cannot find a compatible SQL Server 2008 to download to my computer which has Windows 7. Is there not one compatible with Windows 7?
Thanks for your comment!
