Are you a food snob?

I think that there are an awful lot of food and shop snobs, well here in the UK anyway.
I know several people who will not shop at the likes of Aldi, Lidl, Netto and Farmfoods (these are lower market foodstores here in the UK that sell less expensive - but not inferior - foods).
One woman I know said that her 12 year old son 'would not let her'shop at Aldi as it would damage his 'street cred'.
I think that this is SO stupid, in today's economy I'm glad that they can afford to be so choosy!!
I shop a lot at our local Farmfoods - for one think I can buy 2 large Hovis loaves for £1 when it costs over £1 in other supermarkets for just one of the loves!!
Why on earth are people so snooty about where they shop!!
But now I must hold my hand up to some food snobbery!!
You know those cheap packets of noodles that you can pick up for about 7p - 10p, well I was SO snobby about those, thought that it was a 'certain type' of person who ate them!!
But when I asked my hubby to pick me up a few bits from Sainsbury's, included in the list were some noodles to add to my chicken noodle soup that I was making for dinner. When he came home he was glowing with pride at getting the noodles I said would be around 75p for the grand total of 9p, I didn't have the heart to tell him that they weren't the noodles that I wanted!!
What he had bought was not one - but three 'they were such a bargain' packs of those own brand instant noodles.
With my soup ready and waiting for the noodles I thought that I'd give the noodles a try, I broke the dry noodles into the pan (omitting the seasoning mix), soon they had softened down and looked like - well, noodles!!
To be honest I was extremely pleased with these noodles as an ingredient for my soup, they worked out far cheaper than the noodles I usually use and did the job just as well, they added to a tasty and satisfying bowl of soup.
So the moral is - don't be a food snob!!

oh my....you mean the dried noodles looked like noodles?
hehe...
i don't consider myself a food snob at all... i can go into any kind of shopping atmosphere without getting worried about what others may think. it's also because i really don't care most of the time about what others may think..
here in Malaysia, and around the region, you'd find many 'Wet Markets' almost everywhere.. sort of like a "Farmer's Market" meets "Local Grocer" and is almost as convenient as any large scale Supermarket. everything is laid back in there and i'd meet all sorts of people when i'm choosing my onions or cuts of meat. and it feels so 'alive' and bustling with all the produce and foodstuffs that are on sale..
but then, i do know some food snobs around here too. those who wouldn't even want to step into a Wet Market because they think that its "beneath them" or something... oh well, their lost. because i find a lot of interesting stuff and even some cooking tips at the local Wet Market

Of the names you named, we only have Aldi, but I also have a scratch and dent store. Actually, Aldi is less expensive, but I have to drive a half hour. I find Aldi food to be first rate. I am also the reduced price queen and will pick up lots of foods that are short dated, if I can eat or freeze them immediately. No food snobs at my house.

I find it amazing that a 12 year old son would tell his mother where to shop and I find it SHOCKING that she would do it!!!! The way a lot, and I know it is a LOT, of KIDS run their parents, telling them what they will and won't do and the parents DOING IT, I would not be able to raise kids today!!!! One of us wouldn't make it and it would probley be me!!!!!
We have an Aldi's here in both towns and I have never been to either (I went with a friend once a very long time ago and for me I wasn't impressed with things, also I shop using a credit card and I don't think they take them.)
I have priced around alot and mostly shop WalMarts for what I buy, they are the cheapest. Notice I said-for what I buy- shopping like eating, I can be very picky.
Your noodles remind me of my macaroni and cheese. I buy the boxed macaroni and cheese and use the cheese packets! I put them in potato soup, tuna casselrole, scalloped potatoes. The macaroni I dump into a ziploc bag and store it. I never buy macaroni. This is the cheapest way to get the cheese packets. They sell cheese soup, but it is expensive!

I use Aldi and Lidl a lot, some of their foods are actually BETTER quality than other places. If you like dark chocolate check out their own premium brands.
Other foods you can't change much about apart from the price. A custard cream is a custard cream. A tin of chopped tomatoes is a tin of chopped tomatoes.

No, I am not a food snob in the sense that I do not shop at cheaper stores, I have nothing against that at all, and think people who think like that are just weird. And it is their loss anyway!
But I am a food snob in the sense that I only buy fresh stuff of good quality. So unfortunately some of the low cost stores don't have that, so then I have to buy it elsewhere. But if I find fresh and nice stuff for cheap, I will buy it for sure!

Hi Oldchem, I shop wherever is cheapest but unfortunely we have none of these shops locally but ifI am travelling to visit a friend in a different part of Devon I wil pop to Lidl on the way back and grab what I can there, I buy everything whenever on offer if it is something I usually use. I have never heard of Netto but the nearest Farmfoods etc is a 45 minutedrive which is a shame as I would use far more. I buy Tesco own label a lot too. Huggles. Ellie :D
