My computer has been acting wonky lately & I've desperately been trying to just stay one step ahead of it!!! My hard drive was too full. Fortunately, I found one program that I seldom use anymore that was taking up 7 Gb. I tried to move to my external drive & boy was that a BAD idea!!! It took over 3 days to transfer the file. I couldn't open my email proggy while the transfer was in progress. Now, most of the transfer is completed & I opened my email to get caught up. I now have over 300 emails downloading & it appears that this will take a while also!!! So, if I've missed your discussion while being held captive by my freakin computer, I apologize & hope to be caught up soon!!!! (fingers crossed) Does your computer drive you crazy??? Have you had to clean up your computer recently??? Does it make you want to pull your hair out by the roots???? IT DOES MEEEE!!!

Have you tried C Cleaner? The CCleaner (actually stands for Crap Cleaner) is a freeware system tool for PC users who use Microsoft Windows. That removes unused and temporary files from your system allowing it to run faster, more efficiently and giving you more hard disk space. It is very quick to run and is free to use. The install is really easy, and the download took about 20 seconds on my broadband connection. An Install Options page comes up, and I left all the boxes ticked - these were things like having a shortcut on your desktop, all pretty straightforward there. You download the CCleaner software from their website (http://www.ccleaner.com/) Then install it in your system. It covers all Microsoft windows systems including Windows XP and Windows Vista. When it is installed it stays on your system for you to use, as you require. It made a great difference to my computer and it's so quick, easy and best of all FREE

I use that program, too. It really does work great. Also, Decrapifier works for when you first get the computer as it cleans off programs that come installed that most of us do not need.

Now you're speaking my language...FREEEE!!! I hadn't heard of C Cleaner, but I will go download it now & see what it finds!!! While I'm doing my Spring cleaning, I might as well clean it ALL up gooood!!! I do believe in preventive maintenance rather than post operation. Good to know about the Decrapifier too. I hope I won't have to buy a new computer any time soon, but you never know. With me doing my own work, I may need one real soon!!!!

My computer and I are doing battle right now so I have a lot of empathy for you! Mine is about 10 years old and really out of date but I'm not a gamer and I don't need it for much besides myLot, browsing my guitar forums, writing and a few solitaire games. I got a virus, Trojan.Gen, a few days ago and don't know how I got it but I think I succeeded in killing it. Nevertheless, my pc is slow to load up in the morning and sometimes I feel like I have a dial-up connection. I'm scared to log into my bank account so I'm going to hook up my spare computer for that purpose. I might just load my Microsoft Office stuff into it and send this one to the repair shop. I should not have gotten a virus, I have all the protection that is recommended and I keep it updated. This is driving my nuts and believe me, it's a VERY short drive!

My boss is a golfer. Every time I say something is driving me nutz, he says it's NOT a drive, it's ONLY a putt!!! And he's right. When this first started, I downloaded several proggies to check for malware & did a reg cleanup. I have a really good virus proggy. I scan frequently for viruses hoping if one slips in I can kill it BEFORE it does much damage!!! I'm hoping this fix will last a few weeks before I have so start working at it again. I keep putting off taking it to the shop partly because it's not easy to get to where everything plugs in & partly because I'm just a procrastinator. I know just enough about the inner workings of a computer to be dangerous. So, I ask questions & try logical suggestions & pray, pray, pray!!!

Oops, sorry I forgot to mention... In another discussion on the Lot, somebody (I forget who) recommended a proggy to protect your bank account, passwords, etc. I tried it & I love it!!! You can get it from CNet at download.com It's called Key Scrambler. Even spaces are given a keystroke. It shows what you are typing on the screen & it shows what any keylogger is capturing in the upper left corner. Only problem I have with it is that it will get confused & type the encrypted keystrokes every now & then. Then I'll have to go back & remember what I was saying & retype it. Of course, I could turn it off while in myLot...but I don't. It gives me a sense of security while I'm logging into my checking or savings account!!! It put a tool in my system tray where I have easy access to turn it off & on. You might want to try it. You can uninstall if you don't like it. I think it was free, but it seems like I could get the "pro" version for a nominal fee. Just a thought so you don't have to run 2 computers to do your banking in the safety of your own home!!!

Oh Yeah I totally know what it feels like to wanna pull my hair out by the roots because of my computer and it's ornery ways either that or take a sledge hammer to it. Some stuff on disk that I use only a few times a year I will copy to a disk...that way I can uninstall it till it is needed again and not have it taking up useful space...Things I don't use but once comes off also..I try to keep it going halfway decent with a few programs I have installed...like the Advanced Windows system care free and CCleaner.I try to keep things up to date..but still there are times my computer is slow to sluggish and I have to go clean it out of programs and other stuff..I have almost 2 thousands emails right now and that is after I have deleted 2,000..

I had a total hard drive failure about a month ago! Everything is gone just about Fortunately most of my photos are elsewhere and my music is on my iPod so I shall have to reverse it back to iTunes. Scary moment I can tell you. Backup daily is the name of the game I think. If you can, buy an external hard drive and back up to it frequently. That way you can delete your 7 gig program and not worry because it's already on the backup drive. Don't go pulling out that hair either. It's too pretty to mess up like that!

HEYYYYY P1key!!! I keep ALL my music & photos on an external drive & I save ALL my documents to it too. I don't backup like I should as I always mean to do it tomorrow. I have a box with all the proggies that I've bought in the box in my spare room. I keep a copy of the downloaded proggies on my external drive along with a copy of the receipt with the reg key. Yes, it would take me a while to rebuild, but it would also make me rethink which proggies I really need to use. My hubby used to blow up my computer regularly so I'd have to start over. He said it was the best way for me to clean out the crap...& he was right!!! Now that I've moved this one proggy, my hard drive is back to breathing naturally once again!!!! I'm truly sorry you had soooo much trouble with yours & I hope I don't have to follow in your footsteps!!!!

I bought an external drive, last year, to move photos, videos and then back up other files. I have removed all programs that I do not use. Yet, I still have a lot of stuff on here and really need to up my storage space. Actually, I really need a new one, but other than two missing keys (that I will get around to replacing as it is odd typing), it is still in good shape. I bought it in 2006 and it may be OLD now but it works for me. 3 days to transfer? OMG, that is a lot of time. I know that sometimes we are just held captive by our computers and it does drive me nuts.

When I first told it to move the file, it said it would take 3 hours. That made my hands shake thinking of 3 hours of no computer. Then is just kept transferring & transferring. I was afraid to stop the transfer as I had told it to move instead of copy. Next thing I know it was 3 days later & it was still saying it would be 3 hours until it would be finished. I bought this computer from a friend back in 2004 & he had had it for a year or maybe 2. I think it can still be upgraded to current specs. I love it because it still has XP on it. My laptop has Vista & I still don't care for it. Plus I'm really NOT ready to go to 7 yet!!! Anyway this old computer is like a comfortable pair of shoes. Why buy new ones when the old one is soooo freakin comfortable??? I know what to expect with this one!!!

Thank you Leslie!!! I don't have a son...almost or otherwise...to fix mine for me (& definitely not buy another for me), so I'm learning the hard way. That is something that I've been meaning to do anyway & just putting it off. Well, I can't put it off any longer!!! The time has come to learn!!!! I think I'm going to the computer repair place that tells you what to do & lets you do the work yourself. Maybe I could learn enough to understand what's going on inside this dayum box. The 2 parts that I know will need replacing would cost about $200. I found a used one on Craigs List that only cost me $75. I'm hoping to put the 2 together & come up with one good computer. Mine was crashing until I cleaned it up some. Fortunately, I found a few proggies that I seldom use & I moved them to an external drive. Then I notice the one proggy that was eating up a good chunk of my hard drive. I've moved most of it, but still have a little more to go yet. I've been putting off moving that last part until I get my current myLot fix!!! I couldn't open my email proggy while moving the larger chunk of the file & I didn't realize just how much I depend on notifications to respond to discussions. I flailed around like a fish out of water until the transfer finished. Now, I'm going to do the best I can to get caught up & then I'll move the rest of the file. Good luck with your computer guy & your computer!!!

Hi LadyMarissa, I know how it feels to have your dependable friend, your computer, get sick and want to crash and burn. I experienced major computer slow down a few months back. I had no clue what to do. I just knew that I was not in market, financially to get another. Since I am not a computer geek, I had to find professional help for my computer. I did take into one of the very popular computer stories for technical support and repairs. Of course, they told me what was wrong and how much it would cost to get it back up to speed. I was so desperate, I said yes to every suggestion, they must have seen me coming. Well, it turned out to be a nightmare trying to get them to even start the work on the computer, they kept it for days after the promised due day. I finally got it back, but had to return it numberous time before I was satisfied. When computers are functioning proper they can take you around the world, but when they crash most of your life seems to crash with them. Addictions!!!!!!!!!!
