City or county life??

United States

I was born in Newark, NJ... but I have NO clue about living there because I never really actually lived there. I was raised in a rural area of Virginia in Blairs, VA, later moving to a small nearby city. I loved the county... it was so open, so free. Very little interference, no police and away from it all, yet close to civilization within 15-20 minutes. I also love the big city... (I've also lived in Atlanta, GA) where there is always something to do, never a boring moment and plenty of jobs to go around for everyone. I just am now trying to narrow down where I want to relocate to.. where there is actual opportunity for me and my daughter. What do you guys think?? Do you prefer city or county life??

I live in the country, about 20 minutes from a county with big city. I love it here. I relocated three years ago when I moved in with my husband. I think if you could find a place not too close to the city but also not too far that would be the best thing. Me, I would never go back to the city to live, I love it too much out here in the country.

I am so happy for you. Sounds like the most peaceful place for you and your husband. I agree.. city life can be hectic... but living RIGHT outside the city in a county area or the suburbs... is the best of both worlds. I think a lot more people are moving to rural areas as well because the cost of living is a bit cheaper. Thanks for sharing your experience!!

I LOVE the country! I'm all for the freedom of living the way you want without the interference of neighbors, all the commotion of vehicles, people going to and from, the tight spaces you have to move about outside. I love hearing the animals and seeing the stars, the smell of a bon fires! However the only convenience I have found with this day and age of living in the city or really close to one is the opportunity to find a job. Jobs are unbelievable hard to come by, then again I live in Michigan so I feel that speaks for itself. I think that the country is a better place to raise children and that is why I'm staying here.

I think that the country is an excellent place to raise children too as they can run and play and you really don't have to worry too much about your children getting abducted or something. But, you're right... jobs are scarce everywhere and I find it that more people are shifting to the city because of it.. which doesn't necessarily make the outlook better. Commuting is getting high now, too because gas is always going up. Thanks for sharing your views!!

I have always lived in cities, and I currently live in a big city too, but I think I would really love living in the countryside, so I hope I get to do that at some point in the future, maybe when I have kids...

It is quite an experience... very quiet and peaceful. I'm sure that you and your future children will enjoy it... especially the fact that it's a safer environment for them. Thanks for commenting!!

I've done both and I think it's just what you want your lifestyle to be like. If you want to be close to conveniences then city. If you dont want to drive in heavy traffic and be surrounded by crime and tons of annoying people trying to get to those "conveniences" then country life is the way to go. The nice thing about living in a small town these days is you can order things on the net.
