A blast from the past

July 25, 2010 11:17am CST
I've been having a bit of a clear out at home today, sorting stuff out to either sell at a car boot sale or give to a charity shop, I hate clutter! Anyway I came across my old vinyl singles collection in some boxes and started to look through them. It wasn't long before I put one on my record player, yes I still have one :) I've spent about two hours playing my old singles and it seemed like much more fun than just playing a CD, I'm definitely keeping my singles. Do you think vinyl was better than CDs? I started to buy records in the 70s and it was much more fun then than it is now, CDs aren't the same.

I like to listen to old songs, too. Unfortunately I've given away my record player since most of my record were lost. Friends and brothers borrowed them and never returned them. When I asked them, they did not know what happened to them. I remember when I was a kid, one of my aunt always played her vinyl collection and sang along with it. I guess that was the first time I learn English.

That is a good idea. Share it with me when you found them.

Yes, there are a lot of places to download. The problem is I don't know the song's titles and who sang them. I only remember the tunes.

Yes I also love listening to most old songs from the past. Usually I like listening to ballads and other east listening music from the 70's, 80's and 90's. I hope I could search and download more songs that I have been listening when I was Kid.

I like the old records, but I mostly get classical music and not for a while, but we used to get Cds of the Best of - that had those old singers from the 50s and 60s. And there are some from before. I know what you mean about not liking the new songs that much because frankly there are few that can really sing. A lot of it is just shouting.

I grew up in the 50s and 60s and we had the old 45s, but we could not afford them, so I would have to go to my friends's houses and listen to their records. We do not get free ones from our newspapers, but we sometimes get demos, but it is not the whole song, just part of the song so it is not any good. I do love classical best, but my mother liked musicals. When I went to grade school, the music teacher would take us out to a symphony I think it was once a month, and I also loved Disney and most of the music played was classical. In fact, there is one classical piece that I just imagine hippos dancing and being stalked by crocodiles.

Hello suspenseful. We get free CDs in some newspapers of old music, some of the compilations are quite good but I like the sound of vinyl more. I'm glad I grew up in the 70s and 80s because if I was young now I don't think I'd be interested in music at all :)

I remember going to friends houses to listen to what they had just bought, we used to lend each other records sometimes but I didn't like lending mine out in case the cover got spoiled or the record got scratched. I suppose we don't have that problem with CDs but they're still not as good as proper records :)

People are saying Vinyl had a warmer sound and record companies are starting to produce albums on vinyl again. I have some vinyl but don't have a record player at the moment, I must get one as I liked listening to old vinyl singles even though CD's were around when I was a teenager.

Hello Nancyrowina. You must get yourself a record player and have a listen to your vinyl :) I remember when CDs were first in the shops, I thought they wouldn't catch on but sadly they did. It's good that record companies are producing vinyl again :)

You still have a record player? Oh I'd love to listen to some of my old records, but they have been packed up in a stupid barn for over 3 years now, I am sure they are all trash by now..

I have been trying to get all my things out for years..I am sure if you can and look into my archives here on mylot from a couple years ago, I have some where I complained because I don't have all my things back or I talk about the small about of things I was able to get back..It's very frustrating and the longer we wait, the harder it will be to get out, because as summer continues, they stack huge rolls of hay in the entrance, making it difficult to get to our things..But when I told my husband this, all he said was, "we'll have to go get it out" and then nothing..

How frustrating! I'll have a look through your old discussions tomorrow (Wednesday) because I'm really tired now and I'm going to read then go to sleep. I hope you manage to get some of your stuff out of the barn soon :)

Hello Carmel. Yes I still have a record player, I have a stereo system which I've had for about 10 years and I bought a turntable for it. You should rescue your old records from the barn and listen to them, it's a good trip down memory lane :)

My mom has alot of records that she bought a record player for just to listen to them. I just love music so it doesn't matter if they could put it on a CD or not. I went to my dad's storage last week and found these old CD's that I used to listen to. I drove home listening to them and they are an Argentinian couple that sing love songs. I really enjoy the stories they tell through their music. Those songs used to make me sad but I just tried to listent to the words. In one song he talks about this lady who had everything in his hometown but she was always jealous of her husband. One day she killed him thinking he wss having an affair but later on she discovers he was faithful to her. She admits it was her jealousy that drove her to kill the man she loved. Really dramatic music.

Hello PDBME. That's quite a sad story. I think music is great for taking us back to another part of our lives. Certain songs always remind us of certain things. I couldn't live without my music but I have to admit it was better on vinyl than on CDs or an Ipod. I'm playing some really old singles today and it makes me feel young again :)

Vinyl seemed a lot more fun to play with but maybe it is because that is something you grew up with and would mean more to you cause it is from your era. I don't know. But yeah vinyl was more fun to set up. $-MrDollars-$

Hello MrDollars. I don't know what it is, I can't put my finger on why but it was just better, a more satisfying way of buying music. CDs are better quality but I'd rather have a shelf full of vinyl

Oh we are going down memory lane here are we? I still have several singles and 33s too. My record player packed up a few months ago but it is easy and cheap to buy a new one here so that is on the shopping list already. I still have the very first single that I bought - "All or Nothing" by Small Faces I bought that at the same time that I bought mu first record player and I played it over and over again because it was the only single that I had until I saved up for the next one the next month. Those were the days! I do have a few CDs but they don't have the same 'feel' to them that vinyl records do and it's sad that not everything is available on them or I would buy more as the sound is much 'warmer'.

Hello Mysdianait. What a shame your record player packed up, it's a good job they still make them. I know the Small Faces well, my sister used to buy their singles and I remember listening to them when I was a kid, she used to tell me off for not asking first lol. My first single was Dreadlock Holiday by 10cc and I still have that one, I used my pocket money to buy a single every week and saved a bit to buy an album now and then too, now we are going back! I know CDs have a clearer sound and all that but that's not the point, vinyl has a warmer sound like you say :)
