St Elmo's Fire, Bubble Puppy, 13 Floor Elevators... what do these groups have in common?
Well, they were all bands in the 1970's that played the Armadillo World Headquarters, for one thing. For another, they have all had some kind of rather recent resurgence - tho St. Elmo's is back to its first name -Wheatfield (not the band from Portland) but the reuniting of the 3 original members, plus one, the other half of the duo that makes up Trout Fishing in America.

Why am I mentioning them, well, because this week marks the 40th year since the 'Dillo opened back in 1970.
It may not have lasted long, a mere 10 and a half years, but it left an indelible mark on the early Austin Music scene.

I hope this last one works...
So, have you ever heard of these groups? Ever been there? heck - does you city have a major music venue that has continued to influence the city decades after its gone?

There was a movie by that name, but before it was either a dumb group or a dumb movie, it was the name of a natural phenomenon St. Elmo's Fire

However, as a local, I can take a guess that someone in the group lived on or near the street in South Austin, St. Elmo...

hi ElicBxn sorry no I have never heard ot those groups but then I am
not much on a lot of modern bands either. Here in GardenGrove about the
only thing that influences the city is the huge area of Little Saigon which I am living in the midst of. the Vietnamese boat people fled here years back and settled this 25 block square area of Garden Grove, shopping malls, businesses, homes the works. they seem to be such good
neighbors, friendly, quiet, thrifty and have tremendous respect for their own aged. About music I do not think we have any major music venues here at all. sad.In the year and a half I have been here, I have seen maybe one police car and that was investigating one of the few white families that
live here.

Well, I'm not sure that 40 yr old bands can quite be called "Modern" music, but since you have a son about my age... I guess I can see that you are more like my folks in musical tastes
here's a tidbit for ya - my mom got to see Sinatra in New York City when the girls were screaming and fainting in the aisles for him...

I have never heard of any of these groups although I am a fan of 70's music. Living outside of Pgh. there isn't much of a music scene. It seems to be more of a sports town than any of the arts.
