Ban on Plastic Bag

After spending a month with my in-laws, I came back a week ago to find plastic bag has been banned in my city. Well, in the whole state, actually.

I went to do my grocery shopping and I had to buy a really crappy cotton bag (which I will not be able to reuse at all). I still haven't gotten used to the ban and still forget to take my own bag.
I know it is for a good cause and everything. But I am thinking it is a bit overdone. I wonder if the government will really be able to keep that up. Don't get me wrong, I am all for it. But then there are those kind of things you just cannot do without plastic bag. For example, what am I going to line my garbage bin with now?
My own experience of government enforcement of anything tells me this is not going to last.
I personally think they should have made easier to enforce and realistic law - though I can't really suggest at this point what would be more realistic. What is your idea? Do you think the ban will succeed? Or is there a more realistic way?

Oh gosh! You didn't take home from UK any of those reusable bags while you were there? I have loads of them
Each time I go I end up bringing them back for friends too because they were not available here in Italy until after they were in UK.
I have not used a plastic bag for years. We started getting rid of them at least six years ago, probably sooner and I would much rather use my own than pay for or be bunged up with the bags that the shops provide.
I hope that it will be easy for the ban to be enforced there too because plastic bags are so detrimental to our planet

I didn't know it was going to be banned. I did however brought back one...just because it was there and noone was using it. I will remember that next time.
I hated the one that the shop gave me and I had to pay for that too. It was this really ugly thin white cotton which started to tear straight away. It cannot take the weight and forget about the sharp edged of the boxes...those tear them right through.

@mysD, you should have planned on the trip while I was there. I would have loved to meet up for a pint at the pub.
The worst thing on my trip was that I didn't even go to Wetherspoons as I had planned to. I still crave for their 'Mixed Grill Plate' - though I'm not sure if they still do it.
@meluan, do you mind checking that out for me? The Wetherspoon mixed grill, that is. Do they still do it? If so, what's the price now.

I don't know why they would ban plastic bags. Plastic bags are recyclable.

I think being ecologically aware, doing the plastic ban is a realistic one. Like ion my country, the plastic ban was being imposed in some parts of the region. I think this will succeed through massive information campaign educating the residence and business establishments for the smooth implementation of it, environmental awareness, and through the help and cooperation of us people to the government.

I do appreciate the government's initiative here. But what I am scared of is that they will go full force and patter out in the end. Like trying to do too much too soon kind of thing.
My point is....would they really have time to prosecute the people carrying plastic bags? Would they really have time to chase down people on the street, etc.?
I am just wondering if there is a better alternative than the one they are doing now.
