Do hummingbirds hum because they don't know the lyrics?

I'm just kidding. My real question is why are they called humming bird when they create more like a buzzing sound than humming?

You make me smile when I ready your discussion here. I have not seen a real humming bird. So I dont know why its called humming bird. But I do my research for the benefit to answer your question. Their wings beat (flap) so fast, they make a noise that sounds like humming. It's a bit like a higher note version of a bee buzzing.

That's nice. maybe there really is a humming sound to it. I have had a hummingbird in my room before. It was during a storm here in phoenix and my dad found it in the shallow part of the pond wet and shivering. My dad handed it to me, and I took it to my room and fed it with sugar water. It was really cute, and really small, it is the size of my thumb. It flew and landed on my index finger. I took some photos for remembrance then I let it out when the storm subsided.
