What can we do to save the earth?

Now that there are so many terrible natural disasters happening everywhere on earth, like the floods in Pakistan, mudslides in China, all these are caused by humans. As technology advances, we manufacture more cars, more carbon dioxide being released into the air. Countries everywhere are coming together to plan something. We people must also do our part to save the earth. I see a lot of people wasting resources like water, which is so precious to us. The people of Pakistan have no water to drink now and yet, we are wasting it away??!! This has got to stop. Well, I do hope there won't be anything disastrous happening in 2012. I hope it'll be another false claim.

There are three basic things that we as individuals can do to save the Earth. Each one of us has the power in our hands to make a difference. The first thing that each one of us can do to save the Earth is to give to those organizations already involved in saving the Earth. Now, I'm not talking a lot of money here, in fact, a friend of mine has a jar by his bedside and when he finds money in the parking lots or in other places he puts it in the jar. Then at the beginning of each year he gives it to a "save the Earth" charity. Last year he had collected and donated thirty-seven dollars. That may not sound like a lot but remember this was money that had been lost by others. Let's say only 100,000 people did this. They would have donated over three million dollars! The second thing that each one of us can do to save the Earth is pick one thing that you do that hurts the Earth and change it. A good example would be to drink from glass bottles instead of plastic. Another thing would be to use reusable shopping bags. We put tons of plastic into the Earth each year and this can stop and we can reverse the damage we do if we just change onething in our life! Lastly, we really need to reconnect with our cultural values. Go back and make a list with your kids or just yourself if you have no children of what is important to your family or culture. I will guarantee you that respect of the land or forests or animals is important to your culture. Once you have the list, I suggest that you hang it in a spot where you will see it everyday - the fridge is a good palce for that! Then, encourage incorporating those values into your family's everyday life. We can't stop earthquakes and floods but we can assure ourselves that we are participating in the protection of the Earth by doing at least the three above things. The exciting part is that from day one you will see it working on your end. This will motivate you to do more!

Excellent response! Yea I agree. If so much people are willing to donate then there will be a large amount being amassed at the end of the day!

Influence the people who actually make the big decisions. Yes, recycle your paper, and your cans, and your bottles and everything else you can. Turn off your light switches. Cycle to work, take public transport or share a car. Little things do matter, and do make a difference when enough people do them. But the big changes come from government and corporations. Make sure your elected representatives really get it that this is a big, big issue, and one that you are prepared to withdraw your support over if they don't act. Lobby, mobilise your friends and your community. Some people's decisions matter more than others (unfortunate fact of life). Influence to the greatest extent of your ability those who have the power (which, at least in most countries with mylot users, is power derived from your support) to make better decisions. The science on the severity of climate change is no longer in dispute (the discussions are just about how soon, how bad and where). It's a political problem now.

Hello Judgeironfist and Rawzero. It is very important that we as human beings should address this problem. Thanks for starting the conversation. Rawzero, there is two things which I would like to add to your list. Firstly, Recycle. This process has the ability to save millions of trees and other natural resources annualy. The best part of it is that if you do a bit of research you will find companies that will buy recyclable goods from you. Secondly and I think most importantly, Education. We need to educate the masses (people that are either lind to this or unaware of these problems) as to what to do to preserve the environment for our descendants. We as humnas need to remember that there is just one earth.
