Bye Bye Blu-Ray?

My partner and I are very fond of movies and have a substantial DVD collection, gathered over the last 8 years of our relationship together, so when Blu-Ray was first announced, I was a bit concerned that our DVDs would be made obsolete.
When we first saw Blu-Ray, my partner was blown away by the difference whereas, I'm not that fussed myself, the difference doesn't affect my enjoyment of the film. However, he's almost a man obsessed. He wants only to buy Blu-Ray discs and the prices are still quite prohibitive.
Needless to say we have a few Blu-ray discs now in our collection, but recently a friend told me that Blu-Ray was on its way out! Is this true? Has anyone heard anything to this effect? It's awful to think you've invested in a medium, only for it to become obsolete!

BluRay will become obsolete eventually, because there are always new technologies coming down the line. But your friend doesn't know what he's talking about. Blu Ray is growing fast, and will probably replace most regular DVDs within the next year or two. Some movies are now coming out *only* on Blu Ray, and I doubt that the studios are going to take the chance of putting new movies out in a format that's about to go down the drain. You can buy players that can handle your DVDs as well as Blu Ray, so you can have the best of both worlds. Of course, unless you have a high-def TV, there's no point switching over. As for prices, they're coming down fast, and you can always find sales.

Thanks, I was really wondering. It seemed so soon and people still seem to buy DVDs more than Blu-Rays I think, at least for the moment.

If not now or soon.. it will have to be eventually. I stubbornly refuse to upgrade to Blue Ray because I know as soon as I do... (give it a year to five years) there's going to be a new and much more "improved" technology. (And it'll probably be just a slight step above Blue Ray the same way Blue Ray is just a slight step about DVD.)
It's happened numerous times before. There was Beta, and then Beta was out and VHS was in. There was VHS, and then VHS was out and DVDs were in. The step from VHS to DVD, however, was a leap in format. The step from DVD to Blue Ray just isn't worth it to me. By now, someone's probably outdone the Blue Ray format. We just haven't heard about it yet, but we will. And as soon as we do... someone will have outdone that too.

Yep, it's frustrating isn't it? I hate having to re-evaluate my film collection when it becomes worthless and obsolete.

I know. I don't want to have to re-buy my whole collection every time someone comes up with some digital technology a little better than their last trick.

I still have DVDs, I don't have Blue Ray or HD yet. I don't have the money to convert yet, and I really don't want to because it is too expensive. I don't know how people can afford Blue Ray.

You have FOUR! I don't even own ONE Blue Ray! I don't have a blue ray player to put them on.

We play ours on my partner's PS3. One of the Blu-Ray's came free with it!

We only own four because they're so expensive, but when we rent movies we rent blu-ray discs because they're the same price as DVDs.

Gosh, I hope not. My husband and I have a Blu-Ray player (PS3). And even though we've had it for a few years now, we don't have much of a collection. We have about 3 movies in Blu-Ray, I think. LOL We never really noticed the picture quality until after we got our LED TV recently.
I have to say, with the combination of the two it's added a whole new outlook when watching movies. It's awesome now! Like your partner, we only want Blu-Ray discs from now on. I hope whatever you heard is only a rumor and nothing more, because I know my husband and I would be disappointed if it turned out to be true. I guess only time will tell...
Happy mylotting!

You sound like us. We play Blu-Rays on our PS3 and that came with a free blu-ray disc, bringing our grand total to four! They're still so pricey.

This is the first I've heard of it and I hope it isn't true!
I'm just like you. I see the movie, not the quality. Well, unless the quality totally sucks, like when I first began recording movies on VHS tapes from the TV. My husband doesn't understand how I can watch a tiny 18" screen and be perfectly content. He bought a 52" when they first came out. It's his baby. He got that with a new surround-sound system, an extra two speakers (yes, we have seven speakers to this monster) and he can program it so that wherever he's sitting in the room, he'll be at the exact center of the sound.
Give me a little portable thing and I'm happy. He simply can't understand it.
He is exactly like your partner. He always buys Blu-Ray and gives me heck every time I come home with a regular DVD. My little 19" screen, which is in the bedroom where I sleep when he's snoring so loud it hurts my head, has a built-in DVD player. I tell him that the Blu-Ray DVD's won't work with that TV, so I buy the non-Blu-Ray movies.
But, if it's on it's way out, he's out a lot of money! He has quite a few Blu-Ray movies. Of course, if it does happen, I'll HAVE to say "I told you so!"

That's so funny. Our 42 inch is my partner's baby! And his surround sound system. Personally I don't like being deafened and blinded, but he likes his movies loud and big! We have a small lounge, so the sofa isn't that far from the screen.

It almost sounds like we're talking about the same guy! My husband sometimes watches his baby while I'm trying to sleep, on the other side of the house. Those speakers really amplify the bass so if there's an explosion or anything like that in the movie, the house shakes! It booms so loud I feel like going in there and pounding him on his head.
But, I normally just say, "Are you DEAF? Turn that thing down!!!"
What is it about these men?

It's even worse when he has a friend round and they're watching an action film or playing on the PS3.
I keep telling him I think he's slightly deaf, but he won't have it!

Well it may be true but as prices seem to fall down so too the coming of blue-ray to your home, just like those D VD's in yester years, where CD's were more popular. Well after lots of 3D movies to be released and 3D TV to take your home, watching movies in blue-ray high quality will be of real passion in 3D way

I'm still not sure how the 3D technology will work in a person's home. I'll have to ask my partner to explain very slowly!

4D? Yikes! No I'm definitely not in pace with technology. I guess it's pretty obvious!

I’ve not heard of anything about Blu-ray being on the way out but to be honest I wouldn’t be surprised if something new comes along within the next year or two which is better and cause people to start buying both new machines and newer versions of their favourite movies. I actually have a theory that companies launch a new technology such as Blu-ray and already have the next major improvement ready to go but hold it back purely because they know some people will be constantly updating inline with technology.
I must admit I use to be a bit of a new technology geek and remember going from videos to Laser Disc, back to videos when the cost was too prohibitive and then onto DVDs. So far I have resisted the urge to swap over to Blu-ray because I know will I end up buying newer, improved copies of movies which I already own. I am sure when my current DVD player gives up I will upgrade to a Blu-ray one but till then I will keep on resisting, lol.

This is the very first time I've heard of blu-ray "being on its way out". Given I haven't paid attention to a lot of news in this area when it comes to what's "it", I've only heard the opposite. That is, blu-ray is actually eventually supposed be the standard in upcoming years. I have heard that before, not that it's on its way out.

Nope, blu-ray disks are making its way in the consumer market and got good response till date.
Your friend might confused blu-ray with HD-DVD which released around the same time when blu-ray was out in market.
They both have almost same data capacity but HD-DVD seems to fade away from the market while blu-ray survived.
So, dont worry about that. Blu-ray will rule the market within few years until it gets cheaper for atleast 4-5 years until a new technology comes to replace it.

That sounds possible. I know there were expensive little HD discs. Maybe that's what she was thinking of. Thanks.

Pardon me but I have not heard of such a thing as Blu-Ray....
My husband is very into technologies and he wanted to be surrounded by them Every time he sees a new feature or a new gadget he'd keep his eyes on that thing until eventually he'll get himself one.
I don't care if my stuff are from jurassic era as long as they serve their purpose well. I guess, I'm not that materialistic, huh.:)
Too bad and not a good investment if something so new in the market will be deemed down already. I wonder why? Since all products are tested before placing them in the market shelves.
Have a great day ahead, Phaedra_Scythe.:)

I don't know how it works, but a Blu-Ray disc has a better picture quality than a DVD. It's a sharper image. That said, I'm not really that bothered about it. It's just my partner that is really picky about how he watches his films.
You have a great day too.

Yeah i think so... Blu-ray will be out of pace because of the 3-D technology that is very fast upgrading and there are some dvd tecnologies that produce clearer movies and yet more cheap than the blu-ray. I think these are the reasons why blu-ray will start to vanish.

Blu-ray discs are here to stay. For some DVD and Blu-ray discs will co-exist, then Blu-ray technology will replace DVDs. It would soon be possible to add 25 GB layers to increase the capacity of these from existing 50 GB to 200 GB. Blu-ray would even replace DVDs on PCs. In the future Blu-ray discs will cost same as DVDs.

I don't think its already on the way out. The technology is still new and I haven't read or heard news regarding new technology that may surpass blu-ray. Think of DVD. I don't know when it first came out but I know many many years have passed before they created a new way to watch movies in our home. And now even though Blu-Ray came out its still not obsolete. I think the same way with Blu-Ray. Time will come that its going to be obsolete but I don't think it will happen sooner.

Someone further on suggested she might have been mixed up with HD discs or something. Personally the whole thing is a little confusing to someone who isn't that interested in the technology side of things.
I hope they do last. I hope DVDs hang around even more because we have so many!

I don't think there is a new kind of disc yet? As far as I know blu-ray is the latest. I don't have it yet because it is too expensive. The compatible T.V. and the player and the movies! I am contented with my dvd player with a usb drive.

I haven't heard about a new kind of disc. I know there's a fuss about some kind of 3D television. I'm usually the last to know about new technology though!
