When too much spoils the cake

wedding cake - I think that this cake is beautiful enough as it is

I vivited my daughter yesterday as she was in the process of finishing a wedding cake order she had. She had hand made beautiful lilies out of sugar paste and I thought that the cake was perfect. However the person who has ordered the ckae has given her a plastic bride and groom that she wants on the cake and has also asked my daughter to make a model of a fox to put on it!! My daughter refused to take a picture of the cake with the figures and the fox as she felt it spoilt the overall effect. Of course the 'customer is always right' so she will have to send the cake as ordered. However I personally think that the cake is perfect as it is, I have enclosed a photo - what do you think ? Would you want the other items on it?

The cake looks like perfection itself. While I don't see anything wrong with adding a bride and groom on the toop to fit the ocassion I have to exclaim at the FOX!! I suppose it is each to their own and to my own, the cake is perfect without anything on it.

I agree here with beautyfactor. I think that having the bride and groom would look very nice on this cake. But, if the fox was on here, it would make the cake look bad. Your daughter has done such a wonderful job already. Why would this customer want something so strange as a fox on this cake anyway? What is the purpose of a fox being on the cake too?

The cake is pretty but, being a wedding I too would want the traditional Bride & Groom added. otherwise it just looks like a well pretty cake!

Bride and groom - A sugar paste bride and groom
Here the bride and groom is no longer classed as traditional and is fact thought of as rather tacky!! When customers want a bride and groom my daughter wil;l make sugar based models that are based on what the couple are wearing, these figures though are rather tacky plastic ones !! I've enclosed a picture of teh types of models my daughter makes for her customers

Hi oldchem1, the cake looks really pretty as it is. Your daughter's really talented and skillful. Got it from you, I'm sure! It does seem silly to have a plastic bride and groom on it, plus, the FOX! But well, it probably has a very deep meaning for the couple so whatever the outcome of the cake is like, they will always find it special.

It looks so beautiful and perfect! Yummmy too! I agree with you. All those items on it would have spoilt the beauty of it. Well, it is the customer's cake and she/he can have it however they want as long as they pay good money for it:-D.

I have done a lot of wedding cakes and every once in awhile someone will come up with something that they want added to the cake that is unique to them. The fox, I assume, has very special meaning to them that they are the only ones who will understand.

Your daughter makes beautiful cakes…I’m sure they taste just as wonderful. The lilies look do beautiful I wouldn’t want anything … no even a tiny figurine that might distract the viewers. However, I feel a little border on the sides of the different layers would make it more attractive. And yes, ‘the customer is always right’ and since it’s a wedding cake, they might want those figures on top to make it look more meaningful.

Oh no, brides and grooms on wedding cakes are so tacky and would really spoil this cake. It certainly looks as if we in the UK differ in the bride and groom thing to people in the USA

That cake is absolutely stunning! Your daughter is truly an incredible artist. It does look a bit empty at the bottom layer and I can understand why some people would want the traditional bride and groom on it somewhere. However, a fox??? Personally, I'd want a pair of white doves on it if I were to order it as a wedding cake.

Helen had left the bottom empty to put the couple on, she just sidn't want to take a picture wuth them on! I had doves on my wedding cake - that was 39 years ago!!

A fox???? A fox like the little animal...you have to be kidding right???!!!?? I have never heard of someone wanting a fox on their wedding cake, but oh well, like you said the customer is always right. I think the cake looks beautiful just the way it is. I can see wanting a bride and groom, however, if it was me, I would want something a little more elegant than a plastic one...I think plastic would definitely cheapen the cake! As I have told you before, your daughter does beautiful work. The cake looks so elegant!

The customer may always be right when it comes to the purse strings. When it comes to aesthetics, most have no idea.

I think that the USA must prefer the bride and grooms more than we do in the Uk !

The cake is great! Your daughter is amazing.. :) It's perfect as it is. I can't imagine the cake with the bride and groom mini models, and the fox! haha. But, you're right, the customer always has the final say...

We are all desperate to know why they want a fox on it!!

That is a beautiful cake and so classy, brides and grooms really are a bit tacky these days thougharen't they. However I must say I love those your daughter has made!!

The cake those figures was off was actuaslly a cake for a reception hrld in England after the couple had been married abroad. THe cake was a pile of suitcases with the bride and groom ontop - they were modelled on what the couple wore for their wedding!

Your daughter has done an brilliant job to this cake that she has made. She does not need to add a fox to it at all. This customer has some really strange taste. But it is their cake. I wished that this customer would just keep the cake like it is. Adding anything more to it will only make the cake look ugly. Your daughter has worked hard enough by decorating this cake to perfection.

Hiya chem, I don´t think that anything is missing in the Cake it looks perfect as it is. If they want to put anything on top the flower decoration or part of it would have to go and I don´t think that would look good after doing that. Smashing Wedding Cake maybe they could do another kind of Cake with all those Decorations that they want to put on there. Otherwise it would not look good on top of those lovely flower spray thing.
