Recently, I have a vision to make my home computers to connected together as an intranet. I have 3 computers connected together as a home network, base on Windows 7 workgroup. But I want to try something different. A home intranet for myself, and my sisters. I am planning to get a refurbished computer from Black Friday, or probably a cheap one; then install it with a web server software as a server. I just wonder what is the best web server software would you recommend me to use it? Whether a free download of Apache, or Microsoft Internet server, or something else?

FreeBSD would be good, I remember working for a web server company back in the day before dot bomb, Best Internet and that is what they used. Also you might want to check out www.geeks.com they have some older systems as low as like 200 bucks that are not super old that would do what you are talking about. Or also check out dealnews.com Wow so hard to believe it is almost black friday again.

An Apache version seems to be the best web server I know.
I'm now using Xampp, a suit that comes with Apache, MySQL database server, FileZilla FTP Server and Mercury Mail Server, all in one and free. It's mostly aimed at developers, but I think it may be good for you too
Here is their homepage:
