Fix your pc with peanuts...that's nuts

I have my pc on my desktop so it really is a desktop computer It's there cause i don't have much space in my room especially since i bought 140x200 bed for me and my girlfriend. So my pc is like 30cm from my head so yes it bothers me if it's loud. I'm in a constant struggle with it trying to make it silent. So far i changed cpu fan and it helped a lot, i hoover the case all the time, recently i even bought a hard drive cooler that i recommend to all users. Things that cost say 10$ can improve lifespan and reduce noise and heat. Anyway why the title? As crazy as it sounds i actually used a peanut can to cool my pc. I removed the can bottom with can opener(very convenient) and i placed it on my cpu fan. It was just the wright length so that the can touches the case wall. My theory is that this way only the cool air from outside the case comes to the fan and therefore it lovers temperature. That's the theory but we'll see in a couple of days. I also tried to do something about the dust...i bought fan filter for 2$ but couldn't use it because there wasn't enough air flowing in so the temperature got higher. My pc is 5 years old and in great shape but when i'll decide it's time for new one i'll thing hard about how to keep it dust proof and silent. And i'll build it. Have you heard of some crazy ideas like sinking your pc into oil to keep it cold or building a case out of fans? Crazy or not if it works i'd do it. How do you maintain your pc? How loud is it and where do you keep it? Oh and speed fan is program with which you can monitor temperature of hard drive and cpu and case if my long discussion made you worry about overheating. Have a great day myloters

It is surprising how noisy a computer can be. Mine's got two really annoyingly loud fans, one of the hard disks sounds like it will break at any time, and I can't think about opening the DVD draw while someone is sleeping in the house. I know you can put your computer in oil - actually transformer oil, like they use in welding machines. My friend did it many years ago. He was an over-clocking freak - cooked hundreds of CPU's! Leave your CD/DVD drive out!

After i started this discussion it came to my mind...if you dip your pc in oil you won't be able to use cd's so good point Thought about to overclocking several times but in the end i'm afraid to loose it all so i didn't try it yet. After what you said about your pc...why don't you unscrew those two screws and hoover your case? If you haven't that will help you a lot. Thanks for your comment, nice to know someone doesn't just say oh this is too long and takes time to read. Have a great day

One side cover is always off and there are wires and a hard disk hanging out! Kinda got used to having it that way from when I lived in Pakistan. Damn hot and too much dust! Had to hoover everyday!

Many people have their cases opened but i don't leave it open because i don't want my cat to stick her tail in fans or unplug something. I bet it was hot in Pakistan, i wonder how pc's cope with such conditions. Thanks for your contribution

My computer once its started runs fairly quiet for an old computer which has been rebuilt almost every year. Either that or I am just used to its noise. My son keeps it maintained for me w hen he comes to visit me and it is doing just fine. I turn if off for several hours on really hot days just to not let it overheat. the fans are fine and every thing seems to be copacetic.

Great to hear your pc's in good condition. My friend has a pc that is 8 years old and still works fine even tho he doesn't maintain it. Sometimes old things are better that new ones. Thank your soon when you see him, where do you have your pc? I'm guessing not 30cm from your head like me so i'm not surprised it doesn't bother you that much. Thanks for your comment, have a great day
