Found a new use for my crochet hook

I buy my kids clothes often 2nd hand epecially jeans. Well there was a cute pair in the lot I picked up from a back to school sale @ Salvation Army in August. However, needing the adjustable waist or a slim... I didn't look to see if the lil elastic was visable. I had a couple pairs like this. So when the elastic strap inside the waistband was inside the waist band I felt the waistband to try to feel for the edge of the strap then I stick a crochet hook into the opening for the band and fish around in there for a few minutes and I found the end of the band that was missing. So YAY me!

That sort of reminds me of something that I would do with safety pins when Kathryn was younger. She too was a child that needed adjustable waists and when those weren't an option, I would make my own. I would get a thing of elastic and open up the waistband of her clothes and make my own variety of it. I would like to point out that your movement was an act of pure genius. Most people would give them up for lost and go without the adjustable waist.

Thanks for the compliment! I'll have to make sure my hubby reads that someone in the world thinks I"m a "genius" ! My oldest is hard to fit when it comes to jeans it has to be adjustable, part elastc, or slims... and as someone who buys 2nd hand I don't always pay attention to the waist band rather than the price and wear of the item. Otherwise I would of had to wait til she got a lil thicker wich could be another 2 yrs and by then they'd be high waters BUT they'd fit her waist!

hi 3snugglebunnies I love to use a crochet hook for a lot of little emergencies. I once had a skirt with elastic in the waste band and the elastic had broke in two so my skirt was just barely hanging on me and I was as work in the library so I could hardly go around and have my skirt fall off while I was shelving books. lol lol.so one of my coworkers had brought her crochet hook to work with a piece she was working on. so first we made a small slit in the fabric then Keoko took her little hook, found the end of the elastic on both sides then she took some thread and stitched it together so I could wear my skirt and not have to go home and change.this whole thing took about t en minutes and my loose top covered the waist of my skirt so I looked presentable again.

That was awful nice of her to fix your skirt on the spot like that! Even better it was lucky she had her things with to make the repair so you could be decent at work.

That is a good deal. It can be hard to repair that elastic sometimes. I think you have come up with an excellent idea.

I would agree that it would be hard to replace and then reinsert the piece of elastic w/ the special notches in it for sizing. I thought what would be long & skinny enough but could "grab" that elastic if I could feel it in there... a crochet hook!

IT's all on a fluke because needle nose pliars aren't long enough to do the job. I dunno, how I thought of it exactly but it works.

Crochet hooks aren't just for needlecrafting anymore! Congrats on finding that strap. I assume you mean the adjustable strings? Your narrative was a bit confusing!

I should of edited what I typed before posting. This net book is a pain to type on sometimes. I do mean the elastic that looks like this http://i15.ebayimg.com/07/s/000/77/5c/3eb8_2.JPG but usually it's a dark blue is what I fished out from the inside of the waistband (as it's two layers thick and they place the elastic in the middle, so you can tighten it as desired and then with the notch hook it onto the button). If I had not gotten it out I'd have to try a belt on her or just put the pants aside til spring hoping that shed grow into them.

I always keep a crochet hook around, it is valuable for any thing I need to fish out of a small hole.

I usually have them around & in odd places to persay... but still accesable to me. As that's not the sound of change jingling in my purse that's the jingling of crochet hooks *LOL*
