why do parents make their kids wait before getting contacts?

i can understand little kids not getting contacts but to me if they are in middle school they are old enough to wear them if they want them!! maybe its the upkeep or parents worrying about their safety but ive seen so many kids teased about their glasses i think i would try to get my kids into contacts sooner than later if their self confidence was affected!!
did you have to wait to a certain age before getting them? did you make your kids wait before getting them? why?

i think i would wait til my kids were at least 15 before offering them contact lenses,as in my opinion most kids are not aware of the problems they can cause and and about the hygene factor,also i think that a lot of kids really wouldn't want the bother of changing and cleaning them,they would rather just slip on a pair of glasses

i guess some kids wouldnt mind.. i think some that are being picked on would and would be desperate enough to learn but then again they are kids and could not take care of them right even if they think they are

There is a student in the fourth graade that has contacts, but he is mature. He can get them in, take them out all on his own. I think that there are quite a few even in the junior high that are not responsible enough to handle putting contacts in and the proper care of them, without getting infections of the eye. Getting infections from the misuse of contacts outweigh the possible boost in confidence.

true.. i guess you would have to wait till they were mature enough unless you want o hold their hand every day as they put them in.. still sad if they arent mature enough and yet have to put up with teasing because of it.. some kids just dont grow up quickly though..

I got contacts when I was in high school. I only got them because I had a job to pay for them!I think it's up to the parent, child & the optician if they are ready to handle contacts. I personally don't wear them anymore I had a bad experience with them. Plus now days there are so many more fashionable choices in frames at reasonable prices.
My kids are too young for contacts.

i dont have a choice due to some scarring in both eyes so i cant wear contacts but ugh i hate glasses.. i at least only have to wear them at certain times and yeah the frames are sooo much better now so its not as bad but i feel bad for those kids that get the awful frames and then teased over it and their parents just say toughen up and dont let it bother you.. some kids arent that strong..
